Even though I'm completely aware that I myself jumped the switch, there have been a couple of times that for whatever reason the shifter was not in park and I started it in gear. I of course was able to stop the car immediately and not run over anybody or crash.
Haven't thought about this in many years, but back in the 80's I converted my 6 cylinder 3 on the tree '69 Nova to a 350 small block Chevy with automatic transmission. Did not have a park/neutral switch at 1st and it would start in gear. Did wire up a switch, especially since my wife would drive the car. Too many possibilities of what could happen. She drives this wagon as well, but out of habit her foot is always on the brake at startup. Gotta get it fixed.

Hi,dm635 wrote: ↑10 Sep 2018, 08:16 On my '91 740 I had an intermittent starting problem caused by the park/neutral switch at the bottom of the shifter. It may be the same switch that's on your 940. For the time being I jumped the switch wiring. After that my cruise stopped working. Listing this as a possible issue.
There is a danger issue jumping/bypassing the switch though. It will start in any gear. I need to get my problem resolved. Waiting to just get another shifter assy, as the switch and shifter require some disassembly to get to the switch. Would rather have one on hand in case I run into problems taking the one in the car apart.
If you still visit here, please reply to my post...
Can you desribe the starting syptoms you erxperienced please... and also give details of this electrical by-pass. Thanks.
I have a 1990 769 GLE auto 2.8 v6. It has done 100,000 miles, is in excellent well maintained condition (garaged) all leads treminals etc are in good order, and it's runs perfectly, smoothly and returns very good miles/gallon.
Today, it wont start, and I am foxed by this. All the dashboard warning indicator lights come on when you turn the key. However the car doesn't turn over, I don't even get a click! if it were a manual I am certain it could be bump-started.
It has done this once before a while ago) then a few hours later it burst into life as if nothing was wrong.
I am wondering if the shifter may be the cause, hence my asking you about your own symptoms.
