Thank you so much for that info. I sometimes shift the auto to lower gears on a steep hill and that is what may have been what happened that day.I will no longer do that and use my brakes. I'm an old world fellow trying to understand today's world. Blessings to you.

How were you driving the car before shut down when it happens? What you describe is rather odd. Valve stem seals would be consistent leakers and smoke once you start it up after sitting. This is not what you describe.

I know with two of my none Volvos if I move them and don’t drive them (on under a minute) the next start I will get a puff of smoke on occasion. I have concluded it is incomplete combustion.

Hence my question - how is the car shut down when it happens?
