Re: 1996 850 rear hub torque specification, updated, two different nuts used, change in 1996

Post by RickHaleParker »

Found this in VIDA. Vehicle profile set to 1996 AME 850.
Information type: Specifications, mechanical.
Search all for "Rear wheel hub" you should find it.

One thing Volvo is infamous for is: midyear production changes that are not uniform across the production plants.

Jim Bee: What is the thread size of the shaft end?

New nut for rear wheel hub

A new nut for the rear wheel hub will be introduced into production on all 850 models.

Factory Code: Model: Chassis No:

The shaft end thread size has been increased from 20 mm to 22 mm.
New, self-locking nut with 22 mm thread.
The new nut is re-usable.
Note! The rear wheel hub threads must be oiled before reinstalling the nut.

I think the P80 designation was used up to 2000 for the V70 chassis and 2005 for the C70

I missed your post above, Rick, it got caught in the electronic binder as I turned the thread page.... :-)

I’m happy that my intuition on reusing the nut was good!

I am going to check on something this morning.

The rear nut may be one of these Volvo self locking with a metal shoulder inside the thread, in which case my re-using it is a really, really bad idea.

The inspiration for this was that I came across this with the P8- ball joint retaining bolt/nut. Its not really high torque but the nut has a soft metal shoulder that locks it in place.

abscate wrote: 09 Oct 2018, 04:48 It looks like they backed the torque off in 99

A change in angle torque from 120 degrees ( early) to 30 (1999) is a huge change in final torque

The nut doesn’t see any rotational force, it just pins the hub to the shoulder on the spindle.

Confessions..when I did my rear hub I re-used the nut as I calculated the deformation was near zero, well below the plastic limit
What's your source for the 1999- torque value of 30 Nm? Haynes says 120 degrees plus an angle, but they don't always differentiate between -1998 and 1999-. I tried to search VIDA for "rear wheel hub" with profile set to 2000 V70 AME but I got only partial information, as if my VIDA is incomplete.

I'm basically wondering if I can reuse nut 9200250 on a 2000 V70 because it's at low torque or must replace it because it's at high torque. Hate to spend another $20 to replace my rusted brake dust shields.

The torque spec is

120 Nm , then 35 degree angle

Per ricks post above from VIDA. The change came about 1996 with a change in axle shaft diameter
