I did return the Rolex (after pulling off the bracelet to check if it was a replica) Must be old age setting in. I can remember when James Bond introduced us to the Rolex and the Walther PPKS, every kid had to have them. I used up my "blueberry money" on the Rolex, I was able to get it at $85-90.00 (wholesale). That was the Submariner, the Oyster (which Bond didn't have) was slightly more. Anyway, it was never much for keeping good time. I am always amazed that they have become "jewelry" and sell for about $4200 (they have sexed up the dial and the bezel). I paid $65 for the Walther (there was no apparent age limit on buying guns, I did need a note from my mother to buy ammunition) and they are currently around $700. Another sign of old age, for my 16th birthday, my father took me to Abercrombie & Fitch and bought me a new shotgun. No one remembers that they were a gun store. I understand that they would let you "try out" used guns on the roof, that was 38th & Park (IIRC). Can you imagine today? SWAT teams, black helicopters.

I lived there in the 70's and don't recall anything untoward. One exception, I remember watching a rather large woman beating up a man on a street corner. That was near the GF's, so roughly 77th and Lex. In the 80's, I worked in Boston, typically till 7:30-8:00 at night. I did carry "heat", as did many. Downtown was a madhouse and I had to walk home.

I wasn't kidding about the note from my mother, it wasn't a "legal" matter. You could buy .22 ammo in a hardware store, I was 13, or 14, and the owner was conscientious.

The "statistics" in my suburb are high. Chiefly because it lies off Route 95 between Boston and New York. Drug dealers agree to meet just off 95 (10 minutes later, they are 10 miles away). This leads to some violence and skews the statistics. If I don't buy my gas at the station near 95, I'm pretty safe.
