I've tried my first oil change of Mobil 1 high mileage, pure synthetic on my T5 and my oil consumption has dropped to about 1 liter per 2500-3000 miles, from1 liter per 1500 miles. Most of my use was leaks.
It is amazingly difficult to change one parameter is these tests though. If you are an average driver of 12000 miles and are changing every 7500 miles, there is a big seasonal change between two oil intervals for example , in many areas, SoCal excluded.

But the Mobil 1 HM is still a "full synthetic" G3 (or G3+) thing, right, not a G4/G5?

I'm sure G4/G5 oils are great and all, but I can't warrant spending over $5/L on oil when I can get Mobil1 full synthetic for less than $4/L. When I'm just going to dump it out in 6000 miles, I'd rather it be $24 worth of oil and not $48. Sure you can say I could run longer intervals on a G5 oil, but I really don't buy into 12+k miles on a single oil change, especially not in an old motor.

Dump it out? But it goes to Abscate for re-use, right?WhatAmIDoing wrote: ↑03 Dec 2018, 08:25 I'm sure G4/G5 oils are great and all, but I can't warrant spending over $5/L on oil when I can get Mobil1 full synthetic for less than $4/L. When I'm just going to dump it out in 6000 miles...

There's always an equation to work out when it comes to this kind of thing. Cost at the time, vs. top-ups between changes, to engine longevity and miles traveled, maintenance needs due to wear that might have been prevented with a "better" oil, etc, etc, etc.WhatAmIDoing wrote: ↑03 Dec 2018, 08:25 I'm sure G4/G5 oils are great and all, but I can't warrant spending over $5/L on oil when I can get Mobil1 full synthetic for less than $4/L. I don't do 6000 miles between oil changes, but I think I'd still like to try the G4 (I can't seem to work out what the G5 things are) if I find a place around here that carries it, if only to see what it does (if anything) with an already minor consumption.

I'm pretty happy with the M1 0w-40 (P2) and Rotella T6 5w-40 (P80).
OP has a T5, he could run a cheaper 10w-40 (e.g. M1) and probably not need top-ups either. But he seems to have found a sweet spot with the Motul.

ACEA is a European rating system.
https://www.oilspecifications.org/acea.php
Note: A4 isn't mentioned on the link above but it is apparently related to direct injection gas engines.
A = gas engines
B = certain kinds of diesels (light diesels?)
One thing to note is unlike the SAE ratings (ie SN is "better" or replaces SM for example) just having a higher number in the ACEA ratings does not mean it is better. There are different ratings for different oils.
For example, https://mobiloil.com/en/motor-oils/mobi ... gh-mileage
Mobil1 HM 5w20 is rated SAE: SN+ (newest rating) and ACEA: A1/B1
Mobil1 HM 5w30 is rated SAE: SN+ and ACEA A1/B1 and A5/B5
Mobil1 HM 10w30 is rated SAE: SN+ and ACEA A3/B3
Mobil1 HM 10w40 is rated SAE SN+ and ACEA A3/B3
In the above examples, 5w20 carries A1/B1 due to the characteristics of the low viscosity 5w20 and not because the 5w20 oil is "worse" than the A3B3 or A5B5 oils. Just different.
