Okay - there’s also a qualifier there, right? Like... “if the car has not been used for a long time...”?

It also says any ticking should only last a few seconds - like I said.

How’d you figure that?
If you just try and calculate a static value with 13.5:1, that should get you up around 290 psi, not 198. It’s impossible, of course, and that’s why you get a “normal range”. 219 seems about right for a normal max.

NA does, by about 40 PSI

I've done a lot of compression tests on P80 NA cars, the healthy ones come back 200-210 PSI per cylinder. The less healthy ones at 190-200. And for the cylinder that had a broken valve spring, zero psi.

at sea level its comp ratio(13.5) x atmospheric pressure 14.7lbs/sq/in=198psi.
I consider that Volvo is running a grocery getter at 13.5 comp. ratio an engineering feat. and on regular gas.
I cant see how that is possible. its should detonate and diesel.

I so wish to be helpful on this one. Considered and thrown out several things...typing in, then deleting without posting...no it couldn't be that....no that doesn't help...

This is the one thing I can think that hasn't been discussed yet, and might be helpful:

Is it possible you might have a leaky/damaged injector O-ring, or corrosion or damage of the cylinder bore that the injector(s) go into is preventing a good seal? As the engine warms up the the metal expands altering the diameter of the hole slightly and the o-rings become somewhat softer/pliable to conform better to an imperfect or damaged bore or damaged o-ring that no longer fits perfect, between the two (heat and pliability) the leak seals up and a lean condition (and the tick) disappears.

Could a small leak at an o-ring, maybe not necessarily enough to make the cylinder dramatically lean, disturb the injector spray pattern enough to cause 'unbalanced combustion' ...think along the lines of gasoline direct injection running in 'lean mode' where the fuel mix within the cylinder isn't evenly distributed across the air withing the cylinder. With an 'uncontrolled distribution' as such I could imagine knocking/ticking/pinging to be a plausible effect. Most air leaks we are accustomed to dealing with are upstream - not right up within millimeters of the intake valves.

Which hat did you pull 13.5 out of? The highest compression ratio of any Volvo modular engine is 10.7:1.

Your equation does not take in to account the temperature increases due to the rapid compression of a gas, in according with the laws of thermodynamics. The increase in temperature does push the pressure higher then your equation calculates. A compression ratio lower then 13.5 would produce 198 PSI at a barometric pressure of 14.7 PSI.

There are gasoline engines with higher compression than that.

Anyway, shouldn’t it be
(Compression-1^1.2)pressure? And then you have to factor in temperature, etc. Even cam positions. So you’re never going to get a static number.

I think all turbos have the same CR? This is from my 99 HPT

Specifications

NOTE: Measure compression with the engine hot and at wide open throttle

Normal value B5234T and B5254T: 1.1-1.3 MPa (156-185 psi)
Maximum deviation between cylinders: 0.2 MPa (28.4 psi)
NOTE: This applies when the engine is warm and the throttle fully open and the engine being turned by the starter motor at 4.2-5.0 rps (250-300 rpm).
