I didn't release the parking brake all the way yesterday and burned it up. So I called the local Volvo dealer immediately as the break was making horrible noise even released. They told me either I had to wait two weeks for a loaner, or schedule a appointment when they had time to look at it then wait for the parts and schedule a second appointment!!! They preceded to tell me that Volvo's 5 Guarantees did not apply to this state!!! I went ballistic and drove straight into that dealer and gave the management a chance to make things right before I lodged a formal complaint with Volvo North America. They took my car back immediately and disengaged the hung up parking brake and ordered the parts. I have never been treated so poorly by a dealer! I told them they represent Volvo, a luxury brand with high standards, if their employees can't treat customers accordingly send them to work at Toyota where such practices are normal! It's sad Volvo is not policing their dealers closer. I now understand why some hate their dealers because if I lived here I would not want to do business here! June

Jeff passed away this evening. Thank you all for your prayers and support. I'm going to stay here to help until I'm not needed. Then I'm going to cruise somewhere for pleasure! So hopefully some great photos to come soon! June

Only larger cities may have a Volvo dealer....nearest dealer out here is some 180 miles away.

Rural folks tend to buy American built vehicles....it would depend upon the issue, but many rural mechanics shy away from them 'foreign vehicles.' Later model vehicles may require specialized equipment/tools, which only a dealership would have...its not profitable for an independent shop to buy them, especially for a one time repair.

It's good to have service....

All dealerships are independent of the automotive manufacturer. A company store is illegal or severely restricted in most states, to the point they have all given up on company stores except for Telsa. You can thank special interest and shady state politicians for that.

State law is not the issue in your case, it the dealer's contract with Volvo that matters. That is why you rattled them when you brought up Volvo rather then the State.

It wouldn't surprise me if it that dealer is running a double billing scam.
Scamming of out of state travelers is one of the oldest automotive related scams there is.

I realize Volvo doesn't own the dealership, but Volvo does set the standards required to stay open for business. Things like the 5 promises to the customer, lifetime parts and labor warranty on repairs must be adhered to. June

LEOs do it all the time, but full service gas stations are mostly history these days. An independent shop might consider, but I suspect most are honest. A dealership, I don't think so.

People don't consider this option when broke down...buy an used pickup truck, get a trailer and tow it back home...then sell pickup truck.

PS June - "as the break was making horrible"

It's "brake," not "break."

She got it right, It was the breaking of the brake that made the horrible.
