You did press the brake pedal before shifting? if so, the brake switch could be stuck. I think it also does the brake lights so see if they work. the cruise control brake switch is next to it.

Not sure what causes the shifter to occasionally get stuck in park?

It went into hibernation and needed a rude awakening before it's faculties became fully functional.

The shifter in my T5 was like that when I bought it, and it always needed the Manual Override button depressed to shift it out of Park.

Then one day, it decided to work properly, and I only need to use the Override button maybe once every 100 times.

Won't be an issue when I get the manual trans installed.
