Re: turbo boost problems and rough start

Post by abscate »

The 1999-on are a bit fussier to tune but Fast Friday and the Performance Forum has some success stories.

I have one minor mod on the T5 - a blue IPD CBV valve spring which helps my boost out a bit. The HPT is slow off the line but zooms when you bang down to 2 or 3 rd gear

Stage 0 first though - always!

I just tuned and upgraded the crap out of mine at 280K, so all things are possible! See my signature for details. Without doing any upgrades, you could do a basic "Stage 1" tune with the stock turbo from Hilton, pretty cheap and will allow the car to make the boost that you were experiencing, but safely.

The evap canister for this XC is above the fuel tank. To access it and some of the potentially broken hoses, you need to remove the cargo mat and boards (a couple bolts here and there, accessible when you flip up the boards). On the pass side, you'll see a round metal cover. Unbolt that, and you'll have an access to the canister area. It's tight, and not enough space to remove the canister, but I was able to replace a leaky evap hose on mine with patience, some cussing, and various tools used in weird ways. I had a small crack on one of the hoses leading to a Small Evap Leak code.

With most tuning, Stage 0 is basic factory condition. Ie everything works, no faults or errors. Getting there is the main priority for any car.

Stage 1 is usually ECU tuning with none or minimal changes to hardware. Stock turbo, exhaust, intakes etc. some mods may be recommended, but not strictly necessary.

Stage 2 usually sees a need for a new exhaust, down pipe, perhaps a somewhat larger turbo, injectors, intercooler, etc.

Stage 3 will often warrant replacing internal components - pistons, rods, etc, etc.

Someone correct me if I split this up wrong. :)

ecbsykes, any idea what kind of boost this produces compared to the stock low pressure turbo that comes on our car? looks like you drive the same exact car as i do :)
how would you compare an ARD orange tune compared to the stage 1 hilton? would my ecu allow for more boost without an upgrade?

Sommerfeldt thanks for the info there, really helpful. this is my first turbo car so i am leaning as i go, i am sill on the young side :)
it seems that me having the wrong hoses hooked up on the TCV took care of all the issues. the car is running flawless now beside the occasional rough start, which i will check into my evap hoses by the canister hopefully today. i put it on the car lift yesterday and the hose running from the purge valve all the way back to the gas tank was in perfect shape but i could not see on top of the tank.
When standing under the car looking towards the front and on the right side of the engine somewhere by the timing belt i could hear what sounds like a pressure leak. unless it just the pulleys, really hard to tell. any idea what could be on that side of the engine leaking pressure? i also have a slight oil leak somewhere up there but cant pin point where exactly. surely i wouldn't be losing pressure from there?

It can be turned off (not recommended) or adjusted in the ECU, but it’s there for a reason. ;) It’s an involved process, though, so you’d either have to learn to flash and tune, or send it away to someone and pay for it. Hasn’t been either practical or desirable for me, at least, and I do have the setup to tune and flash the ECU at home. :)
