that could be stains from overfilling. Fuel from overfilling runs down near the filler neck on my V70, your model might be a bit different. Maybe pour some(250 ml or so) water near the filler area (gas cap on tight) and see where it ends up.

Hey Folks,

I'm in need of your knowledge and experience again...

I've hit a wall with the One way valve that's at the end of the filler pipe and inserts into the gas tank

Won't budget need to replace

Any suggestions for removing it w/o creating a spark? Should I buy a sacrificial chicken to make an offering to the Viking God of Volvo?

Since you are replacing the one-way valve, I would try grasping the valve with pliers, try to give it a turn to break loose the grip of the rubber surround at the end of the filler pipe. Grasp the valve with pliers so the pliers poke into the valve (i.e. don't crush the valve but grab the lip), hold your other hand around the rubber surround, try to budge it. Once it budges you should be able to pull it out. If that doesn't work then maybe just DO crush the valve, get all the plastic bits out of there and be done with it.

If the pipe is now free of the vehicle you cold also put a little heat to the rubber surround first (use a hair dryer or heat gun), but if the pipe is still in the car I agree you don't want to bring potential spark down near the gas tank.
