Anybody running NON-Volvo CV joints on their driveshaft? Topic is solved

The CV joints provided by Colorado Driveshafts are made in Turkey. The rubber boot is thicker than the OEM boots I removed. They cost $75 each.

I installed them on my driveshaft last May and have been holding fine for the last 3k miles

Finally had a chance this morning to tackle this relatively easy job. I’m gettin really good at removing P2 driveshafts. If anyone in the area needs work involving driveshaft removal I’ve got it down to about 20 minutes! The hardest part was getting the new boot to not spin around when I was trying to tighten the SS ziptie.

Anyhow, no lifetime warranty offered any longer, musta been a promo thing they were doing. I truly doubt I’ll have to replace this CVJ on this car again, very low probability of failure on fronts and rears. That being said, the original boot type seal rear of the joint capsule can and does take a beating from the heat coming off the cat, but the boot that comes with the Colorado Driveshaft kit does seem very substantive.

There is a pinhole on the front (and rear) cap that you can inject grease into with a needle fitting for your grease gun. Let that grease gun sit out in the hot sun for a while!

Glad it worked well Pete. Was that grey boot from the CV joint within the bevel gear? Mine was also grey up front but black in the oscillation damper. Being different colors made me question if it was aftermarket.

If you want to start a DIY on replacing the driveshaft CV joints I'd be glad to assist with photos and tips.

Yep, my front CVJ was gray, rear black. I hadn’t thought about it like you mentioned until now - just never crossed my mind.

Was your front torn? I know you replaced your rear along with the oscillation damper, assume you did the front for the simple fact you didn’t want to ever have to remove the driveshaft again.

I think that front one on mine just got beat up between heat cycling over the years, then me wrenching on it (several times, with all the crap I’ve had to fix on this car) kinda was the straw that broke the camels back.

So a word to the wise - it does take some force to break either the front or rear CVJ free from their cozy & rusty homes either in the bevel gear or oscillation damper. However, be fairly conscientious of how much you’re throwing the CV joint in or out along the path on which it travels longitudinally (especially the front CVJ). Too much in either direction and you’ll have an additional task.

Sounds good to me for the write-up. I still need to do the full Haldex service on our 2006 so I can use that opportunity for photos. Also need to remove driveshaft on our 2001 for a pinion seal replacement. Photo ops should be plentiful!

The grey boot on the front CV joint wasn't ripped yet but it easily split when I slid it off the shaft. With the shaft removed I replaced the front for preventive maintenance.

One tip is if you have the deep Oscillation Damper made for the geartronic transmission then the front CV joint has to be completely removed from the bevel gear first in order to get the rear CV joint out of the damper.

Another tip is push out the rear CV joint from the damper using theses 2 holes. The remaining 6 holes will just slide via the end cap.
