Check alternator output....just in case.
Besides J relays,alternator diodes could also fail in this case.

but the regulator ( and alternator) are working fine...

On your 96 the ABS light is probably triggered by a bad solder joint in the ABS module. The procedure to fix is quite easy: you basically cut the box open, resolder the pins, put it back together and seal the housing.
For a good writeup search the forum. Also, you need an E5 bit to remove the ABS module. Or a 4mm hex socket. The E5 is better, though I have removed mine a few times wirh the 4mm hex.
