I thought of something else.
I think the fans may be 2 speeds and regated by the ECM.
So perhaps your fan is skipping the low speed (which would turn on at a lower temp) and waiting till your engine reaches 230F and the going straight to high speed.
This would also explain why mine turns on (low speed) when the temp hits 213F.
Anyway, it's just a thought.

That's a good thought. I know it's common among most makes for a fan to come on at 220. I'd hoped I would have something as simple as a fan switch, it seemed like somone said the early S40/V40 used one. I couldn't find a fan switch though and, now that you mention it, I have heard about the fan having two speeds. That would mean my fan controller, or something upstream of that, is marginal. At least I know the fan comes on so it works. I wonder why the other fan, the smaller black one on the driver's side, doesn't work. I would have thought that was the A/C fan.
