Mine is rock solid. Can you stop quicker by pumping the brake pedal?

Any ABS problems? Rusted tone rings, etc?

Pumping helps but still not great. Ill check the tone rings when the weather gets a little bit better

So the tires don't provide enough grip? How lighter is your Focus than XC70? Wiki says Focus hatchback is ~1200-1500 kg, XC70 is IIRC 1600 kg.

I've seen a car with a locking caliper (worn piston seal). It was pretty advanced - the wheel would heat up, but even before that the wheel would lock easily. The ABS would 'trigger' only when the wheel locks, even just slightly. I'm thinking the actual problem is the wheels lock far too easy when braking.
