....and I nailed it today, working with wisechatmgr here in Albany

Short version, user error

The setup of the VVT was unamibiguous, but the timing procedure was not, in Alldata.

I locked the cams and did the VVT hub install correctly, one notch before mark.

I then timed it with the VVT hub clocked full clockwise.

This is wrong and puts you two notches advanced.

With 42 sprocket gears, each one is 360/42 = 8.6 cam degrees and thus 17.2 crank degrees.

The entire range of the reset valve (VVT solenoid and hub) is only +-20 degrees, so 2 teeth is way out of range.

I finally understood that the timing marks have to be set after the 1/2 crank past and return, so the VVT hub is clocked fully COUNTERCLOCKWISE.

Once I did this, My cam flanks came in at -16 degrees, roughly.

-16 degrees crank is one notch CAM, I retarded the VVT one notch, and the cam flanks all came in under 2 crank degrees.

P0014 ECM 644A cleared and the CEL stayed off.

he limit position.
Continue turning clockwise until the timing gear pulley marking is 1 cog before the marking on the upper timing cover.
Fixing this. This is in fact, cam retarded with respect to crank , not advanced

I retimed my T5 after the valve job and went through this exact same process, except this time this thread took the time on task to 5 minutes instead of 3 days

@abscate, this thread has been very informative. I am extremely frustrated with my '01 2.4T. I recently did the entire PCV system, a timing belt and replaced the camshaft seals. I also changed the oil & filter, as well as the cap. I had thought I was extremely careful with the timing.

The vehicle starts, idles, and seemingly runs great. It ran for 40-50 miles with no CEL. However, after that the CEL came on. I read it as P0014 - Generic (Exhaust camshaft position timing - over advanced (Bank 1)).

So I reset the code and it ran for another 30 miles and same code.

I replaced the Camshaft Solenoid Adjuster (31355829 Exhaust Cam) and the gasket. Expensive part :(.

Reset the code and it fired again after about 50 miles. Arrrrgggghhh.

When I replaced the timing belt, I held the VVT in fully clockwise position. It seems from what you're saying, that may be incorrect? I'm just at a loss here and don't want to throw anymore unnecessary money at this thing. And I certainly don't want to scarp the vehicle, but I'm beyond frustrated here. I'm also no where near as good as you at resetting timing and putting on timing belts.

What's the downside of driving on it with the advanced timing code? Need to still get around and its my only wheels, until I am of sound mind to give this another crack.

ANY advice happily accepted.

TIA

Correct. The belt needs to be installed with the VVT fully clocked counterclockwise and then one additional notch , in my experience

The p0014 code returns after the first restart after the cam code has been detected “ enough times” in software. The code isn’t “ showing up later” the root problem is always there , and the system just takes time to report it. The only way to really know it’s right at time of repair is to monitor cam flank angle. Covered up threads

I am back to fighting this again on the T5, except this time I am also getting an ECM-3000 code for a high cam signal voltage, permanent fault. AFter a day of fighting it, GeniusBoy figured out if the cam sensor signal isnt good, then the cam position will always code.

Cam sensor was good last year, so will dig in and check install, wiring, etc. Its a $250 part new, 1999-2000 only, so too expensive to parts cannon.

I do not have an ETA of when i could reach the part but people on here have helped so i can throw my hat in for sending it. Car has 366k km on it last i checked. Hasnt been started in about 6-8 months :/.
