But I thought that the '99 model year was a bit of a transition year and as such had more than its fair share of problems. Kind of what might be called a bastard year. Was under the impression that the '98 was the top year for the 850.

I thought 850 ended in 97?! Am I missing something? 98 was the last year that plug wire, mechanical throttle were used if I'm not mistaken. Did Volvo transition to electronic seat airbags in 99+ p80? If so, that means Volvo went bananas on the electronics, not my cup of tea. The only electronic thing that changed from my 98 XC to 96 960 were Coil on Plug.

^^ 98 was the best year for the P80 platform, that is indisputable. The 98 cars are mechanically 850s but cosmetically x70s.
