I found a 2002 v70xc in java brown metallic with all available options, 177k, military veteran owned, 'meticulously' maintained $4k. I have also found a 2004 v70 t5 248k $3,500 meticulously maintained (75yo dude), 2004 xc70 used dealer 177k $2k, 2x xc90 v8, 2003 s80 2.9 103k $2500, and 1996 960 wagon w/3rd row 200k $2400. 2001-2002 and 2005-2007 are the most sold v70 models. Is this because the 03 and 04 are best proven? Please be specific. Perhaps if this thread receives enough in-depth info, it vould be added into one of the special categories. Kind of like what was done on the xc90 and which models to get and avoid.
^sound like a successor of JRL.

Our 2001 V70XC now has 200K+miles.

First, why to throw 2001 V70XC under the bus since it is not in your candidate list, second, $4000 can get you a lot more!
I recently crossed 200,000 miles on our's, no issues. Check the transmission serial #. the mechanical viscous coupler is plenty for AWD in our midwest lifestyle. I ask, why MM issue is over sold?

SuperHerman is our best source to compare the thermostat design in 2002.
First I feel like this is an irritated response. Why? We are here to help and advise each other on Volvos. Specifically on this thread I asked for advice for myself and any others with this inquiry.
Second, I wasnt throwing the 2001 under the bus. I was explaining what someone else said. And it seems that 2 or 3 others on THIS thread confirmed that the 2001 does indeed have issues, although these people explained these problems can be solved.
Third, recently I had a 2001 v70 t5 on my candidate list and was told to avoid the 2001 models.
Fourth, what do you mean by 'you can get more for $4000'? I understand that one is $4000 but my goal is no more than $2500. $4000 is ridiculous for a 2004 177k Volvo. You Can probably buy a 240 or 740 with that mileage for that price.
As a side note, I bought a 2001 v70 base model back in 2019 with 176k for $1500. At about 185k, that solenoid problem arose. So I traded it $1k value at 186k or something like that straight across for a ($1000) 98 XC 143,995 miles in bad cosmetic, but good mechanical, condition.

This is my 2 cents...

Stick to 2004-2007 2.5T models.
Avoid AWD if you can, not worth it.
In snow regions, FWD + winter tires will do fine.

For 2004-2007 S60, V70 with 2.5T FWD. you can buy it with 100K-110K for about $4,000 or $5,000 etc.

The prices you quoted above are way too high for high mileage vehicles.

Addressing some apparently open items. I am not sure what "a lot of pf issues" means. Is pf an acronym for power failure? If so, In the early 2000 time frame Volvo changed how they soldered various components for ROHs reasons. The solder mix was not up to the task and caused failures of various types. Like all new technology the problems were addressed. Many reported failures I have read about were resolved with reflowing/resoldering the offending circuits.

Thermostat design in the 2002. I don't have the 2002 anymore, but I serviced the PCV system and the thermostat housing bolt was a bear to get to without pulling off more parts. If I recall the trick is to either remove everything, which really is not that much more work, or use a SnapOn 10mm swivel socket (which on that day I did not have with me). I managed to remove the difficult 10mm with a wobble and swivel, but it took a long time and a trip to the parts store for more tools. Other than the difficult bolt, there is nothing notable about the thermostat design.

i own a 2.4ltr 2001 and a 2.5ltr 2002 and can see they made alot of improvements on the 2002. if you can find a nice/cheap 2001 then you can update it like i have, however i would choose the 2.5ltr over the 2.4ltr.

Has anyone fitted a 2.3 T5 high pressure motor to a XC?
