<Lightly skims thread> Oh, so used oil that's in decent enough condition..... still don't get the "NB", Though.

I'm considering sending the existing Rotella off to get analyzed. This car uses very little oil compared to what I'm used to.

The used oil came from my ManCar…a 2003 New Beetle.

June makes fun of me about the car. Bmdub doesn’t because has a Miata in pink.

Been changing own oil for also 45 years. Currently have vehicles from 130K to two with 240K (03 Odyssey, 05 GS430. OW40 if you see freezing weather or 5W40 for the majority of other weather conditions. The lower viscosity number for quicker flow when cold while the higher viscosity number is for high ambient temperatures. It's not always about thickness but the additive package which stretches the range.

$57.95 Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 - Great oil but almost tippled in price.
*www.amazon.com/Shell-Rotella-Synthetic- ... C98&sr=8-1
$60.99 Castrol 03101 EDGE 0W-40 - Another great oil but also almost tippled in price.
*www.amazon.com/Castrol-03101-0W-40-Adva ... r=8-2&th=1

BEST DEAL NOW if you return the oil. Even with the high price of shipping you'll be paying a lot less. FCP also provides instruction on how to ship the used oil.

$45.89 0W40 Synthoil Energy Engine Oil (5 Liter) - Liqui Moly LM2050

$40.26 5W40 Synthoil Premium Engine Oil (5 Liter) - Liqui Moly LM2041

If you are not sold on the 0W or 40W and live in a moderate summer temp part of the U.S. this is excellent.

Clemens wrote: 22 Apr 2022, 14:42 As in every oil discussion there are alot of of opinions - just like with different religions. And just as with religion, there is only one correct choice for oil viscosity. But I'm not going to reveal the secret ...

Seriously, though, in Europe x-30 oils were basically nonexistent till the new millenium, we usually had x-40 oils. The US used x-30 oils lile a decade earlier, at least.

Nevertheless, while 0W-x oils don't necessarily cause problems, they might. I worked for a major oil company decades ago, and we had customers report quite some problems when switching to 0W-40 with older cars.
5W40 were synthetics back then and would cause head gasket leaks as the Mobil 1 did on 3 cars with higher mileage. 2 were mine and 1 was a friend's. Saw the 0W-40 Mobil 1 in Costco a couple of years ago and thought I give it a try after not using it for years. It was terrible, the engines felt anemic and on higher revs the lower end protested with loud groans.

Mobil 1 0W-40 was problematic in my 96R as well. I settled with 10W-40

All of the farm stores carry their own private label 5w40 and 15w40 which is almost always identical or close to Rotella. I run 5w40 or 15w40 in almost everything. Both trucks, all bikes/quads and all of my equipment. 5 gallon buckets of 15w40 is $50 and 5w40 is $85.

My 98 v70 is an oil-burning mess, I save the used 15w40 from my motorcycle and use it in that. It doesn't complain, I don't think it even wants new oil.

This was my oil for years till one cold winter the 98 S70 T5 had a puff of smoke and a little roughness for a block. The Swepco 308 5w40 Premium CJ-4 is an exceptional oil which I started using due to colder winters. It is now cost effective again. They provide an oil analysis program for major commercial companies such as CA Coast Guard, major airlines and many disposal companies besides end users so many run this stuff for 100K intervals.
