I can't quite see into the back corner but from what I can see it does seem like it isn't exactly flush, maybe mine isn't so bad. I got the two frame bolts removed from the driver’s side control arm. One bolt a day…sheesh. I bought a propane torch, and borrowed a sawzall. Never could figure out how to get in there with the car on jack stands to cut away….so torch and PB blaster and impact wrench on my pancake compressor….made slow going. Now, the bolt by the ball joint is a real pain! How do I torch it without melting the cv joint boot? What’s left of the ball joint bushing immediately starts to smolder….and I don’t think my old lungs need to be breathing that in. I am having fun. I bought this thing to learn how to work on cars, and it’s provided ample broken stuff!

I would have removed the axle retaining nut before doing any more. If you have the lower control arm bolts out, then you can (or should be able to) remove the axle from the rear of the axle bearing. That will allow you to get better access to the ball joint pinch bolt. The do like to rust in place.

A chunk of today was spent helping another Volvo friend with a poorly 99 V70 GLT. He loves this car and is reluctant to get rid of it if it can be saved. I offered to look it over and see if the concerns he had were correctly identified.
The list is reasonable but will need a bit of financial input. The issues are not in order of importance:
1) Power steering pump groaning - I have a good used spare that can be swapped in.
2) Power steering pump reservoir is leaking badly - New or good replacement needed.
3) Oil from steering pump reservoir has leaked all over the crank pulley engine mount. It has totally separated - New one needed - Man these are getting hard to find. Volvo OE seem to be NLA. Found a Lemforder one for about $100 US (130 CDN).
4) Upper/lower torque bush has failed - I have several good used upper ones but no lower ones.
5) Both inner tie-rod boots are split - New required.
6) Knocking from rear of car - Delta link (RHR) has failed - New one needed. Again hard to find any decent ones.
7) Parking brakes not working - A mechanic had fitted replacement cables and then said the parking brakes are rubbish like all the Volvos. I suppose they are as rubbish as the clueless mechanic that worked on it.............
Tailgate latch not working/broken - Have to see if I have a good used one with the internal door pull locking button.
I think that was it all from memory. Nothing terrible but again it can quickly mount up cost wise!
Otherwise, the car is in pretty good condition and only needs a pair of rear bumper mounts added to the list.
I've said the order of priority is the leaking power steering pump reservoir so a new crank pulley engine mount can be fitted as well as the 2 torque rods. I believe those will fix the noise he is worried about when turning left. He thought it was his axle bearing or axles that were failing. I don't think in this case they are. I could not hear any noises.

Tossed 25w solar charger on my '98 as I hadn't driven it for quite some time and I was getting the hollowed click of the solenoid on an otherwise depleted battery. Will recheck in 3 weeks when I get back to the states to see if it was able to conjure the magic electrons back into it that had previously escaped.

I got my tailgate trim back in last night after a repair kit and some added plastic epoxy, and ABS cement for good measure. Then I remembered I wanted to take the upper trim off and check out the rear window washer valves. Woops.
I also got my center console back in after discovering that the fuse was being blown by a series of bad phone chargers. I took the opportunity to change the bulbs for both accessory sockets and clean the center console, and also look to see if I could find the source of why it takes more force to engage and disengage park on this car compared to others. I swear on my 94 I could move the selector with a pinch of two fingers. Also noticed that there's a coating on the black plastic in the center console area, such as the little tray, coin tray, and under the parking brake that seems to be scratching off. Not sure if I can repair this, or should just take it off.

Can't answer the question on the console marks. Post a picture please as it may prompt some suggestions!
As for the hard trans movement. Have you checked the button on the gear shift knob? They like to break and it makes getting into gear a bear. You can get (now expensive) replacements from IPD and likes. Used to be about $8-10 each. Now silly price.
Today finally attacked the PITA - R front LH wheel bearing. Being avoiding it as this car is always a major pain even on what should be simple jobs.
Fought a few bolts but decided to remove the whole hub as the last one I did (about 10 years ago) on a P80 was a real horror. Much easier to work on the bench with the vise.
Bolts were not too terrible to get the hub off, with the exception of the outer tie rod. I really had to hammer on that to get it to release. Naturally even though I tried to protect the outer tie rod boot, I still managed to nick it. Like I said, this car is ever a PITA!!
At the end of it all, the 4 hub bolts came out like they were fitted yesterday!
I am now going to clean and paint the hub before re-installing. As usual, the simple tasks on a P80 become a saga on this car. Next, have to remove the outer tie rod and swap in a new parts hoard one.

You already know the why, but since I no longer bend in the same places I used to, and given the overall aggravation of wrestling stiff, uncooperative stuff out of tight spaces, this is the how...
