Thanks!

Day 6 with no leaks! In fact some of the leaks I had I thought were maybe from higher up on the engine, but this job has taken care of 3 leaks... one from the oil cooler, one from the bolts near the oil filter, and another close to the filter, but more towards the front of the car.

Now I just need to stop my turbo from leaking and I'll be all sealed up!

On wednesday evening, I got home from work and was completely prepped to finish - the oil pan was cleaned at a machine shop, the block had drained for 4 days, and I was ready - the biggest struggle was getting the right side of the pan up and around the fuel line. Once that was completed, it was cake. USE THE VOLVO GASKET SEALER! - NO LEAKS in 200 miles since. The lifters made noise for about 3-4 minutes, but then quited down - happy wife said the V70 never sounded better. The one thing I learned --- make sure to release the right motor mount (behind the right front brake rotor - and jack the block a good 2" as you begin - once the pan is off, there is nowhere to lift the motor from below -- this would have given just a touch more clearance and would have saved my garage from a bit of cussing. Next project -- the PCV/Oil Air Separator. Thanks for all the help here !! ;)

3-4 minutes of lifter noise? Yikes! Mine was silent as soon as I turned the key, although I did also totally prime and soak my new oil filter in oil.

And yea, I ran into the same trouble with the mount. But I found that I was able to jack it up directly with my bottle jack on the mount itself, making the installation very quick and simply.

Good luck with the PCV! I did that a few months back. It's definitely a bit more complex in comparison, but you can do it!

Nobody else than Walmart had Pennzoil Ultra.
Total $41.91 plus filter. It will be my most expensive oil change.

Hi, I am wondering if I should do this.

I have a 2002 S40 1.9T with 60,000 miles. I went to jiffy lube to do a change, they told me that I am leaking lots of oil, there was only a little left. They filled it up for me no charge and I went home. A few weeks later I checked the oil again and it was low again, about 25% left, so I did my own oil change and I put that Lucas stuff in it, but it didn't seem to help, because a few weeks later oil was really low again.

When I was under the car, the leak seemed to be coming from the oil pan, but I wasn't sure if it was someing above it. So I wiped it clean, drove it around and checked again, and it still looked like it was coming from the oil pan where it was sealed, and there appeared to be some gunky stuff coming out, which i am assuming is either the thick lucas oil stuff, or the old chemical gasket.

I never get a noise on start up or the oil light, so I am thinking I don't have to do the o-rings.

I could post some pics if that would help, so what do you guys think?

The turbo return line can leak as well. Be sure you know where it is coming from first. Clean the whole backside of the engine and engine with engine degreaser/cleaner so it is spic and span. Then run it and make sure you can locate the flow of oil.

If it is the pan - get local estimates and make your decision.
Remember to replace every seal you can get to. There are two for the oil cooler and several in the pan itself. The oil pump o rings should be changed while you are in there. No reason for you to have to do this twice. it can be a real sales benefit when you go to sell it as well. It shows you took care of it properly.

Here are the instructions

ok, i will clean it up (i think i have some engine degreaser somewhere) and take some pictures and post it up to make sure its coming from the sump and not somewhere else, thanks!

i got quoted from a local shop, i think they specialize in volvos, $250 to do the oil pan gasket and o-rings, but i might like to try myself it i can do it just for the parts of about $80 bucks.

where did you get that pdf? is that from a digital repair manual i could buy somewhere?

thanks again
