If you do order the MAP (at that price, I might do one myself) make sure you go through Amazon at the link at the top of the page - that way Matt gets his cut of the deal from Amazon to help support MVS!!

I needed two O2 sensors for my VW, and Klaus' link just saved me 300 USD on those. I took it as an omen and ordered a MAP for my spares kit. PM sent.

I apologize for the delay. Yes, that sounds reasonable to try and troubleshoot. I will replace MAP and see what happens next and check for new codes.
My wagon has not stalled but it is intermittently trying to when I let off the accelerator. MAF is still connected and have let that be.

Thanks!

Why didn't you create a new post instead of hijacking this one? P1633 is related to the speed signal. The fuel pump relay will not ever throw a code.

Because this forum talks exactly about that code and there was talk of repalcing the fuel pump relay to resolve the problem. Read then comment, dont just comment when you have no idea what u r talking about??

The forum (Matthews) talks about this code or this thread does?

I think the point KlausC is trying to make is that this thread is getting long (136 posts) and when this is the case it's better to start a new thread rather than cut in and try changing the current topic. That way the threads stay on topic and the forum as a whole is easier to search.

Try electrical portion of ignition switch for dashboard christmas trees lights and/or do try the speed sensors on top of the gearbox.

The correct netiquette is to start a new thread for a new problem, especially when the current thread is active. Will split shortly.

MAP arrived while out of town...installed now, codes cleared. Car hasn't bogged down nor trying to die. I am on day three or so and has been fine. Will see how it handles around round a bouts, etc. which seemed to be the situations that would make it want to stall.

Check engine light remains on and codes were all cleared.
The same four codes are spitting out:

PO236
PO238
PO455
P1238

and the newest one:
P1358 post MAP install.

That's it for now.

Okay, that new code is for coil 5 primary, whatever that means.

Unlike your grandmothers Volvo which had one coil to make spark, and a distributor to "distribute" the spark to the right cylinder at the right time, the 1999 on car uses a separate coil on each cylinder under the plastic cover. They get triggered by signals from wires to each and ground through a bolt.

So this weekends project will be to swap coils from cylinder 1 and cylinder 5 to see if the new code moves to cylinder 1. That will tell us if it's wiring or coil. You can have a good look at your wiring to make sure rodents have chewed it or anything funky. Incidentally, bad coils can definitely be causing your stalling problem, started 10 pages ago..... :D

I think you should also check your engine ground straps..look for braided metal connecting the engine to the body. I'll have to get under my hood to remember them all.

You are close to the point where your Volvo gets tired of your persistence and stops throwing codes. Fixing it doesn't require help from JPL.

Perhaps I should buy one of those hot new Ford Festivas and trade in the Volvo :D
Kidding.

I will attempt to check out coils this weekend...and anything else you can think of.

Thanks in advance,
