Yeah, you live and you learn! I still scour the NYC craigslist ads to see if another one like that pops up. I'd love to give one another go with a real $250 turbo. But then again, I think I'd find the same pleasure from a T5 manual!

Just prepare, things break on Saabs... Make sure you have some high quality left-handed drill bits on hand just in case. (There's a small Irwin set on Amazon for And torque and oil those head bolts down correctly (they seem to come loose on these cars which is absolutely nuts...) https://www.amazon.com/IRWIN-HANSON-Spi ... e%2C+11119 This is what I used to remove broken exhaust manifold bolts.

Suspension is a dream on those cars. And the cars really haul ass.

And pray you don't get any CIM issues... Keep us posted. That is, of course, if the Volvo-heads are OK with it!
Yeah, a T5M probably has a little more power too, plus that 5 cylinder sound. I haven't heard the Saab yet, but I know I love the sound of these Volvo turbo 5s.
Fortunately I don't have to worry about removing exhaust manifold bolts, last owner already tore a bunch of stuff apart. All I have to do now is remove the timing chain and cam sprockets, then the head is ready to come off.
The motor was locked up earlier, luckily soaking the pistons in Marvel Mystery Oil freed it up though. I guess that's what happens when a car sits in a field for 2 years with the valve cover off!
Yeah, I'll definitely keep everyone updated. I'll just keep it short and sweet because it isn't Volvo related. It's still Swedish though, so close enough!

I've got my work cut out for me on this one. Part of the deal was the PO had all of the parts brand new in box from eEuroparts for the head gasket, new head bolts, valve cover gaskets, manifold gaskets, etc., so that makes every worlds easier for me. Plus it saves me money. Really, with all the parts, I only paid about $250 for the car.
Hopefully I don't run into any unexpected problems!
That is a gorgeous SAAB! The Swedish thing is like an addiction, I think. I was also lured by the siren call of the Volvo's Nordic cousin and found a 2001 SE Wagon (V6) with a blown turbo for $400. After two years of it sitting mostly in my garage, and with my brother's (the_wifesS70) help and encouragement, I finally got it all back together (well, mostly) and purring like a kitten. Intoxicating! At least until I gunned it on the highway to see what the turbo could do, got off the off-ramp, then saw a huge puff of white smoke from the exhaust and a low-coolant warning light: I had burst a radiator hose (original, probably) the way Han Solo sliced open that tauntaun on Hoth.

The SAAB likely blew a head gasket from overheating. I'm having it checked out on Thursday. Fingers crossed that it's not as bad as I fear.

Lesson learned: Replace your coolant hoses. (I've now queued up new hoses, expansion tank, thermostat for my V70.) :)

That's what I paid for this one haha. They're nice cars for sure,I can't wait to drive mine. I got the head off yesterday, now I just have to spend what seems like months cleaning off the deck and head. What a nightmare...
My cousin just blew out the radiator in his S70 the other night. I told him this would be a good time to replace all of the cooling hoses, and I need to do the same. Luckily he didn't overheat the engine, though!

Helped my brother swap out some original 20-year-old transmission lines that were weeping ATF all over the driveway for the past three months. On a 98 V70 this job was pretty straightforward and easy on an N/A: only tools necessary, 10mm and 12mm sockets, some 1/4 wobble extensions, perhaps a 1/4 flex head ratchet, some needle-nose pliers, a small pick, and... a 22mm crowsfoot socket!

I was able to fanagle a 22mm wrench around this nut, but there wasn't really enough room to hit the nut on an angle that I felt comfortable with. I purchased this socket off of ebay for $12 I think. It's a fancy, shmancy Proto socket. (I've been preparing for my exhaust manifold job for the past two years!)

I think a 3/8" drive 22mm crowsfoot is a MUST have for P80 owners...

Oooh, a Proto! My cousin's '99 needs that line, we almost had it at the PaP last week, but he decided it was "too hard" to get off. Seriously!?!?!?

Anyway, the Saab now runs! Has a massive oil leak from the timing chain tensioner that I cross threaded, but that is curing right now with a forum-suggested JB Weld fix. I'm really hoping it works, because I am NOT taking that head off again. Lotta work...

I have a nice setup, mostly USA brands Craftsman, SK, Wright, and this one Proto crowsfoot! :P Tools certainly don't make the man, but having the right tools certainly helps.

Glad you got the Saab running! Congrats! But man, that oil leak is scary. JB Weld to the rescue! My brother's got a V6 with a blown head gasket. (Or two, on the V6, no?) He wants to tackle it but I'm hesitant... If were the 9-3, and if it were a MT, I'd say lets do it... but I just can't bring myself to get amped for it.

Yeah, head gaskets on a V6 Saab are probably a little bit of a challenge. Transverse V6 and V8 engines are not fun to work on!
Luckily the JB Weld seems to have worked. I started it again and drove it today long enough to clear out the leftover head gasket smoke and the noisy lifters. Drives pretty nice, just have to fix some vacuum lines. I'll post some pics once I have new tires on the front wheels and it's off the doughnut!

Most of my tools are Craftsman, unfortunately no US made ratchets for sockets. I have a whole assortment of the store brands... lots of Harbor Freight, Husky, Kobalt... I want a complete setup of one single brand. Preferably Matco, but I don't have Matco money, hahaha

If Lowes is nearby just get Kobalts as they will swap on them on the spot if you break them.

I have yet to get any warranty replacements on Kobalt tools, but I've heard Lowe's is pretty easy with it. Harbor Freight is always really quick and easy for warranty replacements. Sears is alright, but I don't like that they don't carry repair kits for a lot of their really old USA made ratchets. I brought in some old ones my dad had from my grandfather and they replaced them with new Chinese ratchets. Kinda sucks, being a "ratchet enthusiast" like me.
My local Sears is closed now anyway, and it's not worth the 30 minute drive to get to the next closest store. Which will probably only last another 6 months with how fast Sears is closing stores.
