Some people like them, but I’m not one of them. They seem to be reliable enough for the most part, especially in a smaller car like an S60, but they have had a lot of issues. I still say they are reliable because most owners seem to have good feedback, and being that I don’t work on these I couldn’t say how widespread the issues are.
I feel like the engines are just far too weak for the applications. I’ve heard of everything from rod bearing issues to head gasket failures and various other things you wouldn’t expect in a new, low mileage engine. The problem I have is when they take that engine, slap a turbocharger and a supercharger on it, then stick it in a 5k pound XC90. That’s a LOT of heat and stress on a little 2.0L 4 cylinder.

I know this is far off topic, but Volvo engine bits have been used for other cars as well. I actually know the person who installed a Volvo 16V head on a Ford 2.3 Liter Turbo engine. It's been dubbed the Folvo engine. The first version went into a Ford Capri, and then he build a MGB with it:

Right? It's a steal at $750. Runs and drives.

I'm not crazy about gen 1 Bertones, but these gen 2 are absolutely gorgeous. And incredibly rare. I've seen 10 or 20 Ferraris since the last Bertone.
