Based on the symptoms, thermostat or heater core would be the immediate suspects.

So the car has 130k miles, thermostat (oem) was replaced at 100k at dealer. After all this I decided to replace the thermostat and that seems to have been the problem! Does this seem normal an oem thermostat failing after only 30k?

you can test the old one with a thermometer and hot water.
