Does look like that piston is getting steam cleaned. How fast is coolant level dropping when you drive?

I'm going to do a test drive today and see. I marked the coolant expansion tank with a pencil to mark the level yesterday, so hopefully I'll get an idea during the test drive based on the miles/time driven/speed driven. I'll post updates here again this afternoon, thanks man, and thank you everyone else as well!

Does anyone happen to know good after market head gaskets? I've read the multilayered steel ones are the way to go, but I'm unsure. What I'm leaning towards at the moment is the fel-pro 26203PT, which online shows to be a multilayer steel gasket. With all of the other related gaskets being replaced a year ago (cam gaskets, head, exhaust, etc.), I should be good to reuse those, right? Also, should I go ahead and get new head bolts too? Those were also replaced April of last year. Thanks y'all!

Just an update for everyone, I've determined after several test drives and coolant level checks and compression tests and so on that it is not the head gasket or the block, and it may have truly just been my nose tricking me into thinking that exhaust was sweet (been inhaling too much exhaust).

With that, I've ordered new front lower control arms and brakes, as well as went and found a good donor seat for the driver from an S70 at a scrap yard, as well as some interior trim pieces that were missing and bugging me. The car is looking much better inside and out, especially after spending about an hour and a half giving the car it's likely first wash in several years. Next up is just waiting for those parts and knocking that out next weekend.

Unexpectedly, I also just purchased a 2006 V50 T5 AWD after selling my Honda Fit after finding an meticulously maintained one at 156k miles. and now that I've got the V50 I'll be probably selling the V70XC to some friends of me and my partner who are a younger couple and in need of a car after their Fors Focus transmission went. Partner was concerned about longevity of the V70, and though the interior quality sure feels like a step down in the V50 and I don't like the styling nearly as much, I'm a much bigger fan of the driving of the V50 with the T5, so it's not a complete loss. I hope it serves them well, and I'll be around to help them out with it since neither of them are very mechanically inclined. Just to be safe they're going to have it inspected before purchasing though. I'll miss it truly, but I'm happy to be helping them and that it'll still be around. Thanks everyone for your help over these past few weeks! Off to the S40 and V50 forums now.

I wonder if letting go a first gen V70 in favor of a V50 is an upgrade in terms of longevity.
A friend of mine bought a brand new V50 years after I bought my first 850 and he is out of the V50 game due to various problems while I still drive 850ies.

That's great news. Please change the engine mounts in it(at least top, lower right and transmission) it will make great deal of difference how it feels. Good luck with v50. I honestly still missing my 98v70xc and think it was the best car

On that V50, check the engine mounts, particularly the RHS one. They like to fall apart and you can't see it. Only warning is a clunking when it gets really bad.
