I have a 97 850 R that I purchased from my parents in Feb this year. I felt and heard the horrible brake vibrations so I took her to the dealership.

Jan, the rear rotors replaced by a Volvo dealership (prior to my getting her)
March, front rotors and motor mounts replaced by Volvo dealership
March, rear rotors replaced again (mechanic stated they were 'defective')
April, rear rotors replaced AGAIN

June took it back YET AGAIN .. yes all this time the dang vibrations from 10-5 mph slow down after 30 mins of driving. Now they the dealership says "it has to be your tires because you have such an agressive tread" Im running Michelin Pilot Sports. It's annoying and I don't know what to do now.

Hey M,
Sorry to hear about the dealers taking money out of your pocket....Im not going to bother taking my 850 in because I know what they'll say. They will tell you anything but the truth to yet get another set of rotors on your car including the cost of the high priced part and labor. All this time people saying torque on the nuts, wrapped rotors, and mounts. Hmm...what was the total cost on all those repairs...probably at least a grand? Were your brakes and rotors replaced with authentic volvo parts?

Hey M,
I am living with this problem for now...not looking forward to switching out the break system. When I do I am going to get performance rotors and caliper system. I have learned that if you pump the breaks a little it cuts the chances of vibrations. m

It's really a shame when parents will unload a lemon on an unsuspecting and trusting child......just kidding. I have been "living" with the vibration for quite a while and even though I don't like it, it does make me brake a lot sooner and smoother than I normally would. I would like feedback on this though.....if you really stand on your brakes does the vibration disappear completely or just get worse? As for mine, the vibration goes away if I am forced to brake very forcefully. Michelle, just for fun ask the mech., that actually mounts your tires back on your Volvo, what torque he/she uses.

I do have some opinions/ideas for performance rotors. I don't believe in using cross-drilled rotors. They tend to wear out quicker. Reason I say this, is that because of the holes, you do get faster cooling and water dissipation. Since you have quicker cooling, chances that the rotor can warp due to sudden temperature drops increases. These rotors are great for races and such, but if you want longevity of your rotors, cross-drilled might not be the best. I shoot for longevity, because replacing all four rotors every year or two (at most) gets really costly. Slotted makes more sense to me, you get water dissipation features. There are dimpled ones that act similiar to the cross-drilled ones, those are probably better too, because when they wear down, they become like OEM rotors. Warped rotors can cause all sorts of problems, like what this topic is all about.

BTW, just like islandboy, my old car had its rotors worn down to the lowest tolerable limit, and it made me brake early and smoothly, which I carry over to my Volvo. Unfortuantly the car got into an accident (not brake related) a day before it was to have a brake job (unfortuantly I still have all the rotors and other brake components still with me, unsold).

Probably warped rotors or unbalanced wheels.

it never ends ;-( Now the ABS is going out. Beautiful red lights illuminated on way home from work yesterday. I have appt with them next thrus to check that issue out and I will ask about the torque on the lugs.

Yeah if I let up on brake pedal or pump.. it does make it go away. "It's really a shame when parents will unload a lemon on an unsuspecting and trusting child......" islandboy - you have no idea! :o :) :o
