Excellent advice. If you wouldn't mind, I'm going to incorporate this into the PCV writeup.mikealder wrote:As I said earlier connect a 5/8" diameter pipe to the lower port that the PCV connects to and blow through it as this is the easiest way to work out if the oil return is indeed blocked, if it there are a few things you can try to clear it out before resorting to dropping the sump.
I rodded the port out all the way to the base of the sump using some 1/4" clear plastic pipe, the carbon and sludge gets pushed in to the bore of the pipe as you feed it down in to the port, cut off sections of the clear pipe that are blocked and keep repeating until it comes out clean. At this point repeat the 5/8" hose and try to blow through it, if it is still blocked spray a load of carb cleaner down the oil drain port and leave it overnight, if this clears the port change the engine oil as the carb cleaner will be in the sump, well worth trying rather than taking the sump off - Mike

Your more than welcome to add it in, it is already in the PCV guide I added to the forum earlier this year that covers the N/A Denso equipped engines, also consider adding the picture as that shows where the oil return typically gets blocked and why it is so difficult to clear without dropping the sump - Mikejblackburn wrote:Excellent advice. mikealder is absolutely correct.
- Connect a 5/8" hose to the LOWER port and blow through it. You should hear bubbling air coming through (if you have oil in the sump!).
- If not, you have 2 options:
1. Remove the sump, renew O-rings etc. and clean the port but this is labor-intensive.
2. As mikealder pointed out, you can use the same principles as plumbers do. At hardwarestore, they sell a "Sink Cleaner" for $6. It has a spring mounted at the tip of a metal coil.
- I have had good success with this device while unclogging my sink at home.
- The trick is: remove the spring as it has a tendency to fall off!
- All you care is the flat metal coil.
- Probe it Volvo engine LOWER port slowly and withdraw it to pull out debris.
Eventually the metal coil will come to the other side.

If you are just going to use the plumbers sink tape to punch through sludge you might try heavy duty wire of similar 1/4" width. The "ribs" on the wire could help remove gunk and it will be more flexible. I have NOT tried this but I think I am headed for a PCV clean on my 2001 V70XC P2 and I will post results if I get them,

Update, I did this hose mod and the smoking went down but not away. I just pulled the catch off found it plugged. I reamed the drain hole with fish tank hose several times as well as the upper block hole and made sure it was all the way clear. I still have smoke but I will pull the modified heater house out a gain to make sure it is not clogged up at the ptc.
Any suggestions for other things to do?
I have that tiny vacuum hose to the intake manifold. It is possible it's clogged up bus this much smoke probably shouldn't be caused by that small house right?

Would it be possible to blow compressed air through to clear the blockage?mikealder wrote:As I said earlier connect a 5/8" diameter pipe to the lower port that the PCV connects to and blow through it as this is the easiest way to work out if the oil return is indeed blocked, if it there are a few things you can try to clear it out before resorting to dropping the sump.

Have you cleared the PTC nipple? If it's clogged, you'd get lousy vacuum.
