Re: volvo S60 transmission problem
yes, there is a charge for the software update, but before you go to the dealer for the update, flush the tranny fluid.

I am having similar issues. The biggest thing I am noticing is When I backup and put the car into drive, it has about a 30 second hesitation before shifting. This is just long enough for me to hit the gas, the car to rev up to about 3000 then is shifts, and clunks into gear.
A previous post said all a guy has to do is drain the oil with the plug and refil the oil. This sounds to me like it leaves half the old oil in the tranny and doesn't do any sort of flush. I assume the method in the previous attachment where you disconnect hoses and re-attach them else where is the proper way to flush the transmission, though I'm not sure what I'll use as a plug to plug the one line, and am not sure what hoses to disconnect and reconnect.
Thanks for the help

Why don't you read newer posts and threads instead of rehashing old threads?
For a complete change you need to do three (3) drain and fills, but doing this does not disturb the crap in there that can bedome dislodged with disasterous results!
Of use the Gibbons method, (also do a search) and if you don't know which line is which, PLEASE... let someone else do it

well, i'm having similar issues, seeking advice. 2002 s60 2.4t. i'm not sure of tranny fluid change history -- i've owned it from 92k miles, now has 124k and i've not changed it. it started shifting into 2nd irregularly, and sometimes downshifting hard several months ago. i just drove it carefully -- my wife's current and previous v70's did the same thing for years. but, mine started slipping last sunday, and the "urgent!" messages came on. i made it home (only 5 miles to go!), and did a flush with 3309 this evening. drain plug had some sludge, but not more than 1/2 a small marble size. flushed with 12 quarts, 2 at a time. nice and red now. for the first 5 minutes of test drive it shifted up and down like a dream! very smooth. but after that, it went back to slipping. no code registered, but slipping pretty badly. I rechecked fluid levels, took out 1/2 quart (puts it just above the lower mark -- was higher than the high mark), but that made no difference. still slipping.
doggone it, i came in and listed it on craigslist. but i really don't want to sell it. nor do i want to sink 000's into having someone rebuild the tranny (car has hail damage, so not really worth tooooo much). is there anything else i could try?
thanks. jt

I just purchased a 2002 V70 2.4 T with a 114.000 miles which also had problems with slow shifting between forward and reverse and flaring or bang shifting into gears, after reading everything I could find on the subject I learned that the Mobil 3309 is the fluid to use because its specific for the Aisin-warner 5 speed transmissions and that it is NOT a syncetic fluid because of the design of the lock up torque converter, go the Mobil 3309 web site and check it out. Anyway this what I have done-1st 1/2 a can of Sea foam Trans tune up and after 100 miles all of the flaring is gone and the slowness between gears is 90% better I am now going to do a complete fluid flush with Mobil 3309 and a install a B4 modulator update from ipd.
I recently had my dealer (a LARGE Dallas dealer) do a flush-and-fill on my '01 S60 T5 and they used synthetic fluid-NOT 3309.
They said synthetic is better in hot climates like here in Texas.
I know my transmission shifts BEAUTIFULLY when cold in hot weather, and always in cool weather. It is when HOT the transmission clunks on downshifts, and engages harshly at times on upshifts.
I understand sticking solenoids and valve body components are VERY common in our transmissions when they are hot.

I had the same problem as OP and had the s/w upgrade done almost 2 years ago. The problem came back shortly and got worse. Then shifting from forward/reverse would have a 3-4 second lag. Then the downshift clunk started happening occasionally. Finally, was driving along and the whole transmission gave out. Wouldn't go into any gear and barely was able to coast out of the fast lane and park the car.
In between all this, the dealer just said they could find nothing wrong (no codes). Now what do I do? Any chance Volvo will consider this a defect and cover the cost? It sounds pretty common. At 85k already.
