Cold air intake for 850's

I've looked at those, but I'm still out of ideas...It would've been a lot easier if I had the original airbox.
Maybe If i run a tube from the front and just point it at the filter I'll improve things a little bit?

You should be able to pick one up at your local JY for less than $10. 850s are all over the yards.

Not in West Virginia...

There is a scary defficiency of Volvos in this state. You don't see any on the road, so I assume there won't be any in the junkyards.

By the way, I had to buy my car from NYC and then drive it back 600 miles. That's how determined I was to own a Volvo 850!!!

This is my set up, tonnes more power, better sound, not had a problem with hot air or anything like that.

This intake is on a n/a 850.

To get more cold air you can buy moulded inlets for splitters, lights etc from demon tweeks.

Hi,

Just joined the site, what a fantastic site for information.

My Car is also a 850 2.0ltr 20v GLT Estate (non turbo).

I've just preformed the following air filter mods:

- Replacing the old air intake hose for a much larger one
- Closed the hot air intake flap to only let in cold air

Also ordered a Ariro Performance Air Filter (cone shaped) but after a little research was advised that a may have trouble fitting because of the MAF Sensor. I came up with the following mod, please refer to pics.

Air Filter fitted using flexi air intake piping.

Seems to work fine, only fitted a few hours ago so will see how it works on MPG & Preformance! Feedback welcome.

Hi,

I've just modified the above slightly by opening up the front of the air box by an inch ......... wow what a difference in the sound! From 2000 RPM it starts to roar and then from 4500 RPM you hear the god of thunder!!

Sorry for adding a side comment to this, but I must say props to the guy rocking the hella horns =].

I love mine and I'm glad the Volvo crowd knows about them too.

I know this is not relevant to Volvos, but i am running a nissan 200sx s14 with 1 bar of boost etc etc. I dyno'd the car with and cold air feed and without the cold air feed. There was no difference having a cold air feed directly onto the filter and I have a dyno print out to show this.

From my experience as long as the car is moving air should be circulating into the engine bay anyway.

Hi,

I agree that if you are using a dyno machine the car will not show any increase in power if a cold air intake is fitted or not. This is because the bonnet is open when testing, but, when the bonnet is closed the engine bay is mostly filled with hot air.

The cold air intake is a device used when your moving to bring lower air temperature's into the car's internal-combustion engine, to increase engine efficiency & power. Cold air provides more oxygen for the engine to burn.

The person I brought my 850 from did this to my car. The thing is, he took the stock airbox out and put a cone filter on the MAF, which would have been cool if he had boxed the filter in so the hot engine heat would not get to it.

funny you should mention this because i bought that from one of the forums not too long ago(a modified '99-00 70 series factory airbox lid+cone filter+coupler).

i became less than enamored with the "spectre" brand filter so i am biding my time to find a better quality cone filter.
