Re: DIY: 1998 V70 Thermostat tips/tricks
no i mean the coolant was just at the full mark before i started the job now its at the top of the overflow bottle. I am worrying about it exploding or something. should i take some out then watch and add as necessary or just drive it? I don't understand why it wouldn't go to the full mark like it was before, is there air stuck in there or something?

Use a syringe to suck out excess coolant.
Leave it at Max, then test drive the car around the blocks.
It won't explode, any excess coolant will be expelled through the cap. But again, keep it at Max and test-drive.

Man, every time I read a thread that I think will be a waste of my time I learn something new. LOL I have replaced several thermostats and have NEVER even considered pointing that little bleed hole towards the front of the car. Like someone said, the small amount of air that would be left in there as a result of the orientation is likely not worth a second thought, once the t-stat opens the air will get out of it real quick. If there is a bubble left, it's got to be about the size of a small m & m. So, if you didn't do it, going back to correct it would be a total waste of time in my opinion.
@ Hanzeb: I'm sure you will be fine with the coolant amount in that overfill tank. Once the car warms up and the air burps the level will equilize. The motor should warm totally up in 5 minutes or 3 miles. At least mine does. I changed my T-Stat about 5 days ago and simply caught what spilled and added it back in.
I do like those torque bits a lot. One of my buddy's had one and it made getting that rear bolt out a breeze. I pulled mine out with the ratchet bit and speed handle. It was a little scary but it worked fine with a bump. I pulled another bolt out of a car at the jy that I will use to replace the rear torque bolt that I swapped to the front. Not sure why people torque those things down so tight. My car had the Volvo t-stat in it and I replaced it with the 90c Wahler one. Nice and warm now.

I'm fighting with this myself. Former owner partially stripped the hard to get to torx. I just went and got an 8" craftsman t40 screwdriver to see if I can get it with that...

If the Torx bolt heads are stripped consider taking the thermostats housing off the engine then it can be worked on in the garage/ workshop with less chance of damaging any of the pipework/ fuel lines etc, it comes away from the block quite easy - Mike

It mostly burped up all the air. After each drive i take of the cap let the air out and re tighten it just to make sure, But it still hasn't gone down to the same level. Maybe there is a little air still in there or i dunno. I hope i put it facing the right direction. It had a thing saying to radiator so i faced it towards the radiator. I hope i did anyways lol. Anyways it heats up in like 5 mins not even and i get real good heat, so good i have to turn it to the floor lol. Yea i guess the nappa brand was made by stant. Its 192 degrees F 89 degree c.

You are not suppose to take that cap off when the car is warm. Only take it off when it's cold, like first thing in the morning. As long as it's not low don't worry about it.

Looks like I am a victim of the dreaded stripped torx bolt. However, on mine - its the one that is "easy" to get to... I do not have lots of fancy tools... any simple options for trying to get this thing off?
