...and the answer is.....

The idiot DIYer had tightened the turbo/intercooler hose leaving about 1/4 inch gap between hose and flange at the top of the intercooler.

At high rpms the turbo was pushing enough air to let the car run, although not great...at idle, the flow and temp were all messed up, the MAF obviously not well correlated to what the car was getting, so all h*** broke loose.

Minimal mechanic bill offset by makeup kit to cover up red face of embarrassment
