Given what you said about the engine, I agree with Robert's and your comments, do either your head or the one from the car. Be sure to do the valve stem seals on whatever head goes back in. I haven't watched his head gasket videos but I bet they are very good.

I have read about literally a few dozen people swapping 15g's onto LPT engines with zero issues, and have done one myself, so I really think you are fine there. On my 98 GLT with LPT engine, I currently have a 15g that happened to come from a 95 R. You will however need to keep the exhaust flange that is currently on the 98, the part between the turbo and the downpipe, as this part may not match up.

Awesome! Finally a scenario where the biggest cost is time instead of the usual dollars. I'll be getting that turbo, pulling the head and sending it to the machine shop to be cleaned and decked, replace the bad valve, and install the valve seals that I saved from the gasket set I used when I did the headgasket last year.

That 850 had a stainless down pipe bolted to it. Is it worthwhile to pull that as well?

Almost certainly, as long as you have the time and inclination to swap it. In that case the flange on the 15g would go with the install (unless they happen to be the same).

I recommend only using Volvo brand valve stem seals, or check posts by JDS60R for what brands are good. It would be super frustrating to have leaky valve stem seals again in 2 years.

The '95 turbo came with a conical flange while the '98 has a straight flange. It can be swapped but if you are going to use the down pipe from the 15g just swap it over.

They're Victor Reinz. Seems to be a respected brand.
