Agree with above although it's hard to bring arguments unless we present these to a specialist. But the springs in cause, despite having lost the pain coat, really don't look that rusted. Indeed the spring in this topic seems to have had a crack that slowly developed (darker area), but imo the crack didn't appear because of rust or then many S60 and XC90 would have also snapped. My S60 springs - along with many other seen at the junk yard - are really heavily rusted and didn't crack. Given that of all 2001-2009 P2 Volvo models the XC70 is responsible of maybe 95% of all spring failures (and there are several documented online), my understanding is that something went wrong with either the manufacturing or the design on the XC70 springs. Worth mentioning the XC70 had only a few mechanical differences from the V70 and one of these were the springs - could Volvo have rushed into production/design longer springs for the XC70 without calculating/manufacturing them properly? I wonder if the coil diameter is the same as on the S60 making the XC70 only a longer (thus weaker) version of the spring on the S60. For example, in comparison with the S60 spring, the S80 spring has slightly larger coil diameter (the S80 is heavier) and are not known to break.
