94 850 Turbo. I bought the car with 280xxx miles.

At 333,000 miles, I took out the original engine with the non-original transmission out so I can prepare the car to put in a rebuilt engine/manual trans/upgraded turbo in the car. 1.5 year later, the head porter was still dragging his feet to finish the head, and I was tired of waiting so I bought a running parts car with 160k engine/trans and put them in my car. The 333k engine still ran fine, so is the transmission, but transmission was seeping ATF and the engine's compression # wasn't the greatest, it made sense to buy a running parts car and use them instead.

I still have the 333k engine/trans but I highly doubt I'll be using them again.
The shop here has a 1 year warranty on a transmission with 150k miles on it, the warranty also covers 70% of labor, so if it does need to be taken out I won't be out on all the labor either. So between a 1 year warranty on a transmission, with 70% of labor under that warranty, 2 new axles, fluid, and everything, we are looking at around 2,400 dollars.
For $2,400? That's way too much for a used transmission, in my opinion. No need to change both axles if they're not broke now. Fluid is 6-8 qt of ATF. For $2,400, I'd want a rebuild transmission.

You can always use your S70 in town and rent a car to travel long distance if you worry about reliability.

I know I could get a used trans online somewhere from a Volvo salvage yard and have them put it in, however if it doesn't work when it goes in, I have to pay the labor to take it out and in again… So, I'm thinking the 2,400 is the best bet?
I don't think I would pay $2,400 for a trans job, not even if it were a new trans. My situation is different so my opinion may be blurred by that. I would be ok with a 30 day warranty. If it last 30 days, it will probably be fine. Shop around, but if you can afford to upgrade, it may be time to cut bait.

Well at 90 dollars an hour for labor, taking out and putting in a new transmission can add up. If I buy one off ebay for 500 bucks and have them put it in, then I'm still paying about 1500 dollars with labor. If that one fails then I will be out again for the labor to take it out and put another in, so why not spend the extra money knowing I won't have to pay for labor if the one they put in doesn't work? The rest of the car is spotless. The other thing is the last two day other than throwing the arrow, nothing has been going wrong with the tranny. It comes and goes. It has been driving fine last two days minus wanting to throw the revs up pretty high before changing gears, but hey that just makes the car a little faster.

I think I'll be replacing the trans. I don't think I can afford a car payment right now. If I can get 6 months out of the car without any major repairs then the transmission will be worth it as a car payment would be about 400 a month anyways.

Thanks! I take care of it, two new front seats, steering wheel, paint is great. I'll keep it a little while longer.
