Re: 96' 850 GLT N/A Manual/ECU replacement

Post by DARK_BLU »

The five plugs I took out were Bosch Super Plus. They all looked bad, but the fifth plug was already apart when I pulled the wire to start to remove it:

Got it out and replaced them all with Genuine Volvo, 8642660, as recommended. Voluparts had them for $36. It's good to have a local place to go to for Volvo parts, besides the Stealerships...

Car runs like a champ. Next up will be the exhaust manifold to insure there is no exhaust leak. Then, we will see if the codes come back....

Some of the nice self fusing electrical tape will hold that plug together..

Nicely done. Will be interesting to see if the codes stick around

I gotta get me some of that self-funding stuff. Would solve a lot of my problems. Does the tape come with lottery tickets? :D

I find it amazing that this car ran as well as it did with a broken fifth plug. While I'm waiting to see if the codes come back, should I complete the "Zero Tune" by getting and installing a Bosch Ignition, or go for the Exhaust Manifold first? Both are going to be done. It's just a matter of, which one first? If I'm wrong and there isn't an exhaust leak yet, there will be, as the original manifold needs replacement. I found an OBX on Amazon for $183. Says it's Stainless Steel. But then, both FCP and EParts have Aluminized for $151 and $149. There's a local general shop that can install it for me. While I'd love Stainless Steel, Aluminized will do and I'd like to support the site by buying from a site sponsor. Since I've gotten away from the ECU replacement, should I have made a new thread for this? Everything is still related to the P0133 and P0140 CEL codes. I didn't see a way to rename the thread to the P0133 and P0140 CEL code issue but since the codes came back and everything I've posted here was related to that, I wonder if the mods could rename this thread to "P0133 and P0140 CEL codes" so it would be more helpful for anyone encountering the same issue on an 850 N/A model Volvo?

I would hold off on the manifold until we see if codes come back

Just hang loose until we figure out if its fixed. Once we do that, we can clean up the threads, titles, and regap your plugs..

Well, the plugs have been replaced with new Volvo 8642660. Just replaced the Ignition coil today with Genuine Volvo. We'll see if the codes come back. To be continued... :D

100 miles after finishing the Stage Zero Tune up, I got a CEL P0140- No activity bank 1/sensor 2. This madness with the CEL/P0133/-P0140 has been ongoing since March of this year. Each 02 sensor has been replaced twice and either codes P0133 and P0140 are cleared and either one, the other, or both codes come back randomly. The only thing that happened in March other than the first 02 sensor being replaced in February, was my last oil change in March. I used a K&N oil filter.

Neither of the adapter harnesses were replaced when the Oxygen sensors were replaced multiple times by "that shop", so I will have to do that, myself. I just ordered the front and rear 02 sensor adapter harnesses from eEuroparts (Site sponsor, yes? ). That along with a new Preheat Hose (the original is falling apart) and an oil change (Mann filter this time. Not K&N). If replacing these adapter harnesses resolves the issue, then I will be pleased that the issue is fixed. We will see. Will report back after replacement and driving to see if codes return. Then we can put this saga to bed for good...

Ok, the CEL came back twice and twice, it was P0140/Rear 02 Sensor, no activity, so I replaced both front and rear adapter harnesses and took it into shop. I asked them to replace the Rear 02 sensor, as the code indicates that's what is causing the CEL. They indicated that they'd replaced it with a Genuine Volvo 02 sensor previously. They "rebooted the ECU", indicating that they didn't recall if they'd done that the last couple of times that the Rear 02 sensor was replaced. So, after 100 miles of driving, I get the CEL again and again, it's P0140, again. Three times in a row now. I looked at the Rear 02 sensor and it is indeed new. I'm at a loss, other than to buy a rear 02 sensor that I know for a fact to be Genuine Volvo, pull the car into the garage, put it on ramps and change it, myself. Short of that, replacing the ECU is the only other thing left. I'm at a loss on fixing this any other way, as I have no exhaust leaks or vacuum leaks.... I cleared the code again with my code reader. I'm going to disconnect the battery for 30 mins. two days in a row and see if that changes anything.

I understand your frustration but still maintain that the ECU has close to zero chance of being the problem, it may be just as frustrating (or more) to replace that. How about the connectors on the rear O2, are they all nice and clean?

If you can get close to the rear O2 with a camera and post up some pics of any lettering on it, we can perhaps help you determine if it is a genuine Volvo part. I sort of doubt it is, unless they charged you like $300 for the part alone. Bosch maybe, but genuine Volvo I don't know ...

As long as we are grasping at straws, your idea about an exhaust leak could still be relevant. The gaps in the mesh you showed are OK, the actual flex joint is underneath that.
