Glad you got the source finally. It was similar to my issue on my 2000 R when bought. It also had a whine, so I replaced the alternator and serp tensioner/belt to find it still there. Makes me think another good diagnostic tool is the 'short' serp belt/A/C delete belt.
All appears good with the Volvo world again for a short time!
