bmdubya1198 wrote: 22 Jan 2017, 07:42 It is possible the VVT hub itself is leaking oil, as it is oil filled. The T50 cap on that hub has an o-ring on it, and it may be leaking. Otherwise, if you have the hub off already, I would do the seal just for peace of mind.
+1 to this being easier than BMW VANOS. These cars actually have a pretty simple VVT setup... I was confused by it when it was a problem on my cousin's car, but that just made me learn it. Make sure once the cam gear/VVT hub is tightened down, you turn it clockwise to its limit and the alignment mark on the gear lands on the mark on the TB cover.
As rspi and cn90 have already said, that cap is in place of a rear cam seal on these '99+ engines. No need to worry about it unless it's leaking. If the cap is damaged, replace it. $11 part at the dealer, and I think NAPA even sells them for $3.
FYI - the bolt is a T55. A T50 will strip out the bolt or shear your bit.

The plug in front of the main hub bolt with the o-ring is a T50. The main bolt for the VVT hub is a T55.

About 2mm of in/out play on VVTs shouldn't leak. Slightly more than that (say 2.5mm) and you need to set the seal slightly out of the head.

3mm or more of play and you're going to spend money on a new one.

You might have. And you'll probably want to check the condition of the main bolt! :D

Checked both ...T55

There is no way even a hack like me could have tried a T50 - way too loose

That's weird. I thought I remembered using a T50 on the plug. I know for a fact the main bolt is a T55.

You'd better check your plug bolt condition

Ha!

Funny you should mention that... it's stripped out right now... my cousin ordered a new one with all the other stuff we did when the front cam seal blew out, and we couldn't do the exhaust side (intake was the one that blew) or change that plug because the plug was stripped.
So maybe it is a T55...

It was a T55 on both plug and CVVT bolt on the 2005 XC70 I worked on.
