Thanks George, yeah, others on here have recommended getting a used Volvo half shaft over a new one… I used FCP Euro for the Lemforder control arm/ball joint package and will probably use them again if I end up needing to buy a new CV joint too.

It looks original and with the expected rust/dirt coming from the NY state. Try the bearing by hand, it should turn quite smooth, and check the boots for cracks.moonweasel wrote: 02 Feb 2018, 10:36 Lemforder control arms and ball joints are on their way. Found a shop locally who said they'd install those and the CV assembly for ~$450, which seems reasonable.
Can anyone tell me if this looks like it's in good enough condition or not?

It doesn't get much better than buying used auto parts from a minister...kudos to a western NY!oragex wrote: 02 Feb 2018, 15:29It looks original and with the expected rust/dirt coming from the NY state. I can tell what I did. I crashed my 05 XC70 w/ 175k miles on it, bought another 05 XC70 w/ 215k miles on it, swapped everything: powertrain, interior, exterior (what survived). Cost me $2200 and two months spent in garage at evenings and undisclosed amount of beer.
The reason I don't want another car is they are all cr*p. Even our new Volvo XC60 is cr*p, it's not anywhere near my XC70 in terms of comfort and durability. We looked at a lot of "luxury" cars when we were shopping for wife's new car, doh, MB, BMW, Audi are not like they used to be 15 years ago. Domestic "luxury" is at the level of Korean cars these days. Volvo was a lesser disappointment among all, though it's not that ol' good Swedish car we all used to drive.
If I were you I would spend $2000 rebuilding suspension and steering using original parts, to start with. The work you mentioned I do in one evening. Inexperienced car mechanic can certainly manage it over weekend.
