Yeah-I edited my post, started to draft while you were loading last post I guess. I would blend it out and go for it!
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

So you think just blending out the valve seat would bring it to drive-worthy condition? After finding this damage so late, I am inclined to check other cylinders now for evidence of damage. Maybe run some Sea Foam or water through to clean off some carbon and make it easier to see with my camera.

As for now timing cover guide. Suggested work arounds work or just put engine at TDC based on crank and fashion your own marks based on lines you can repeat. Better yet - source a used one while you rebuild the top end. As the head is coming off you need not worry about much until you reassemble.

As to the engine. Don't bother cleaning anything until after the head is off. Just pull the head, file down the piston marks the best you can and fix the valve issue(s).

I think I asked earlier if it looked like the head gasket was changed - that will answer your question if they prior owner was in there.

You should be able to get it all done for under $300.00. Fresh top end and a $500 cruiser.
