Blackbart- Cam swaps seem to be pretty widely done (turbo to N/A, vice versa, and variable to fixed head etc.) and I have not heard of any issues so the machining on these must be consistent. Can't quite wrap my head around why the line boring would not be either, in my case there were 2 apparent bearing areas that were damaged while the others looked OK. No damage on the cam, explained by the fact that the cam is steel vs. the aluminum head.
I suspect the sealant goes to about 0", but who knows how they figure it. There is an allowance for a layer of oil between the cam and bearing surface so the variability may be washed out in that.
Abscate- Correct, Lowes has a pretty good selection (now branded as Craftsman at my store,) and I did pick up a 14mm impact socket while I was getting replacements, however it was too wide to fit through the hole in the head to reach the bolt. YMMV with a different brand.
Thanks!

Thanks for that cam info.
Yes, my experience with impacts is they're too thick-walled for tight clearance situations. However, if I'm using a 1/2" drive or breaker bar on a 13 or 14mm bolt head, I might have other issues to deal with!

Resurrecting this thread to provide an update and to say "thanks!" for the guidance.
After the machine shop did their thing, I reassembled the junkyard head using the valves and camshafts it came with, renewing the valve seals. Installed the head... etc. etc. and now how have a running and driving vehicle.
Getting familiar with my cloned VIDA-Dice device... already paid for itself... resetting the various codes that have appeared. Working towards keeping the MIL off so I can complete the inspection process and get a permanent license plate, giving it a good cleaning and prepping to sell. Have a manual shift S60 T5 lined up for the next project.
The biggest hurdle is a fairly large transmission leak... see separate post... that will need to be addressed pre-sale.
Thanks again, John
