Absolutely no high-frequency start. Scratch start or lift start is "ok", but currents still can damage things.

- The shop I have used for a few yrs use ? acetylene + O2 for welding, so no risks to electronics such as ECU etc.

- Is TIG welding safe for cars with ECUs etc.?

You have to disconnect the battery of course. You could also remove the ECU and TCU but that’s getting a bit paranoid.

UPDATE on my 2007 S60 2.5T...

- The tail pipe broke off bc the P.O. allowed the middle hanger to break (not his fault, just mfg "defect").
Once the middle hanger broke off, the entire rear system (piping + muffler) relied on the rearmost bracket to hold it.
So, wherever the weakest link was, it broke. In this case, the part where the tail piece joined the muffler.

- Bought a "sleeve" from local O'Reilly for $4.00. The I.D. = 2-1/8", and O.D. = 2-1/4".

- I drilled a hole and used a sheet metal screw. Hole not big enough (might have been 1/16" or whatever), so the
Sheet metal screw broke off, leaving the broken part behind. Worked out perfect bc it kept the sleeve inside the tail piece.
In retrospect, I did not have to do this step bc the muffler shop welded it.

- Went to muffler shop (local Midas was very nice). The shop charged me $40 for the welding job.
MIG welding, battery cables never disconnected: they have never removed battery cables in thousands of cars
over the last 30 yrs. I did not want to appear OCD, so left battery cables attached, no issues afterward.

- So all in all, this whole tail pipe saga cost me some ~ $55.00. About $15 for the hardware (the corner piece and bolts/nuts, see my previous post $9, this sleeve $4), and welding cost $40.

- The muffler shop told me this fix should give me another 4-5 yrs. Good enough for me.

- Some photos...

- On the same topic...

- For those who replaced the muffler, what brand? Longevity? Feedback: good or bad?

Thanks...

Why Walker bad, just curious?

The Volvo Muffler is $495 or so on FCPEuro or on dealer websites. Not a bad price if it lasts some 15y/125K miles...

I put a new Jetex catback a few years ago. The car has spent about 1 hour with Jetex and rolled back to old exhaust. It got replaced with a new Volvo catback.

Didn't like droning, didn't like holes in weld seams, didn't like everything hanging far lower than OE. Didn't like that huge shiny "I have a small dick" tail pipe.

Volvo exhaust is way to go.

:D :D :D

And yes, I spent about $400 on a muffler that lasted two years. Wouldn't call that a "good" consumer experience.. My indy has said that he has seen all kinds of mufflers fail quickly. Even replacement Volvo ones. His words "nothing out there matches what was on the car when it got shipped". Starting to believe him.
