Six weeks ago, I paid $600 labor to a home mechanic I know to replace the control arm bushings (had to press out the old ones), ball joints, replace all under engine motor mounts (except the rear engine). Bought the parts from Rock Auto.

My V70 had excessively loud engine noise, so took it into a muffler shop. They said it was the flex pipe. I agreed because they've done work for me before. $160 parts/labor/tip and 45 minutes later, no difference in noise levels. Learned my lesson. Trust but verify. Well, at least they found a rusted out hangar near the tail pipe and fixed it, and the total could have been a lot more expensive.

Two jobs this summer I had done on our 02 S60 2.4t (190k miles) at our local independent shop, East University Imports in Des Moines.

First was a water pump failure. He pulled over quickly at the flow coolant warning and any coolant I added ran quickly out the timing belt area. Work was busy and had AAA tow straight to the shop. It was due for timing belt, had them do the cam seals too. $1141. Felt that was decent value for the work done, shop said it was close to losing the timing belt with how bad the water pump was so got lucky.

Second was a bit more irritating…two weeks later…same car, kid pulled a bit too close to the curb when parking at the mall and busted the radiator. Being plastic there is no repair so towed to same place again. $1020. Rad if I recall right was $600 which seemed high—but had work obligations that didn’t allow a lot of time to do the job.

Paid $1500 for the car at 150k miles five years ago, so still pretty cheap per mile with repairs I’ve done and paid to get done.

Oh, I forgot they also replaced the VVT solenoid with that job… so was probably closer to $800 for the radiator.

For the exhaust leak/load engine noise, check the cylinder head to exhaust manifold nuts are tight. They can loosen off.
