Muffler Pipe Broke

Post by PeteB »

The car has been loud for a while and yesterday the pipe behind the cat broke off.
Is this a common failure point and can it be welded back?

If the rest of the muffler looks ok, you can grind off the ball and socket connection and connect it with a band clamp, correctly sized

Super common, all of my P80s have been welded there.

Had the muffler pipe done several weeks ago and had them put in the O2 sensor while they were at it.

The car is still louder than normal when cold, but I noticed that I first mentioned this in 2016.

207,238 mi Rotated the tires and inspected the front pads, and they have even wear and a bit under 1/8" pad left.
I can't find any record of replacing these since we put in NAPA Premium pads in 2014. I might have
just forgotten to mention it here. That would be well over 50K miles if not closer to 80K.
I'll call FCP and see if they have any record of front pads.

Got a rear view mirror, used from ebay, and new turn signal lenses, installed them 2 weekends ago,
all fit fine and are working.
We put on the used door to replace the smashed one and it worked at first but now the window
does not go down straight and needs help going back up. I'll look for a youtube video on how to fix it.

We're amazed by how well this car drives, it now makes a sort of motor sound from the driver's side
wheel and it goes away when steering one way, gets louder the other way. Probably a wheel bearing,
I didn't feel any play when put up for tire rotation.

Puzzler:
O2 sensor was replaced by a shop about 4 weeks ago. I supplied a Bosch sensor and I cleared the code.
It has been fine for all that time until yesterday the CEL came back on, then today it is louder than normal
but not so loud as when the pipe broke behind the cat. Looking under the car and no muffler pipe is
broken or hanging down.

I don't have the car here but I will check it out tomorrow when they bring it over. So I've posed this as a puzzler.

It is really easy to crack a weld or fitting when you wrestle with OXS.

CAT efficiency codes (P0420?) take a while to present.

Back in mid Oct we got a code P0133 and it was louder than normal. A few weeks later the
pipe broke completely behind the cat. Had that welded and a new O2 sensor put in about a
month ago. Cleared the codes about 2 weeks ago, then a few days ago it got louder and now
has codes P0133 and P0140. It is wet at the weld probably suggesting that that is where the
leak is.
When they welded it they said that they could not reach all the way around and so they fixed
the top with muffler patch. I'm guessing that it fell off.
Not easy working in that tight area, but the patch probably needs to be backed up with some
metal flashing or something and a clamp to keep it there.

Is there a way to weld all the way around without removing the cat?

Getting really tired of this problem.
