Rumor has it they were rockets in their day.
I saw one in person at Capital once, I think it made scrap money, but it was a no-run and some stuff was missing under here:

Not only is there as transaxle under there, it uses a diabolical driveshaft through all that to the fan (I think.)

Agree, french cars look boring. The newer ones however are very comfortable to drive from what I’ve heard. When I was young I thought the small 205 GTI looked pretty cool. Still think so. They were pretty quick too if you got the one with the “big” engine.

EDIT: been living in CA for over a decade now and I have never seen a french car. Don’t know if they were never sold in the US or maybe just in certain states?

Those are pretty cool, and some of the only cool French cars to me, really. The designs otherwise were just really weird, and I don't like them.

Most French brands sold very few cars in the US, Peugeot sold cars here in the 80s, and I believe Renault did as well. Only one or two models each, though. There's actually a guy down in SC getting rid of a stockpile of Peugeots as part of an estate sale. The guy has like 15 of them.

I think it has a pretty killer (B) look to it and would drive that over most cars for the uniqueness not to mention it's heritage. A nice set of wheels and body color on molding and mirror plus tint... Remind me of our families red 83 VW GTI with gold BBS. Closes picture I could find. Didn't have the Euro bumper nor upper hatch spoiler but the mirrors were painted and lower stripes gone. An immaculate and clean hot hatch for the time.

Yeah the Golf GTI was also a cool and sought after boyracer.
I remember the group B rally series. Absolutely insane cars. Existed only for four years. The cars were simply too fast and too many drivers as well as audience died.

Certainly not a terrible project. I would want to see the condition of the 'A/B/C' pillars and trunk floor as well as the hood hinge areas.

I liked the 164, but it was a thirsty engine!

Hopefully someone can make this good again.

Neil.

Then there was the Dodge Omni GLH . Were the 83, 84 GTI's the beginnings of the average family man econo hot hatch? Chrysler saw the market potential with the GTI's. The Rabbits were still the trend setter however.

Not sure when the term boy racer started. Don't think the 80's were that but rather econo hot hatches. Boy racers were more ricers?

Think the word boy racer originates from the UK. The most popular car over there must have been the European version of the Ford Escort. There was a model called RS Turbo. They were never sold in Sweden but I imported one from Germany so it had the steering wheel on the left side.
