Just too many to save! I've noticed price drops on many of the long time for sale cars. Still a long way from realistic, maybe in another year?

The S70 has nice wheels, it is just the rest of it that is an issue..........!

That 'R' is a nice low mileage one. I wonder if the rubber components are any good, dealer serviced or not.

What is the rear subframe like?

$12k is strong money. I wish them luck in the sale. Last one I saw for sale was also a 99 laser blue with 180k miles on it but with a freshly rebuilt engine and tranny work. The seller started at $10,500 CDN, and last I saw it, it was down to around $7,500.

The usual cautions about auctions, wrecked cars, and long distances.
Firefox started a thread about this auction house.
If this were a wagon, I'd buy it, restore it, and keep it as my own. Yes, I just bought a blue one, but I really love green. And manual. And P80.

What do you all see that's so bad about it? Find a green one in a junkyard and replace the hood, fender, and bumper. Reskin the seats. Replace any interior bits from a junkyard. The engine is what has me worried, but take your time and sort it out.

My problem is that I don't care about spending lots of money to restore these cars. It's fun and results in another car which can be used and enjoyed. Worth it for something rare, especially in an interesting color.

The in-house 'reserve' is likely the standing offer from the recyclers in the market of each location, seems to be ca. $475 in DC at the moment. As mentioned elsewhere, some of the charity managers have ideas about what they want too, so there are a lot of moving parts here.
I agree with Firefox, this is an interesting car, rare even back in '98, and it would be nice if a local enthusiast had the time and funds to rescue it from the crusher. Aside from the fact there isn't a straight panel on the whole car, and north of 200k on the odo, the airbags didn't blow, and the Grateful Dead sticker adds value in some demographics.

You will need to check the front to make sure it has not bent the chassis legs looking at the damage. 200k is not huge for one of these, but clearly was not loved. The cost of rehabilitating this car is probably not worth it. Buy it for parts and do a manual swap on your own cars and sell the rest to cover your costs.

Yeah, people get really optimistic with these cars... and pretty much anything really. I just saw a post on FB from a Barrett Jackson auction with a 2003ish Tahoe that sold for over $30k. People will pay for ANYTHING at these auctions, and Bring a Trailer.

I’m puzzled by the R price asks at $12k. You are right Neal, safe to assume rubber bits are questionable on any 15-20 year old car and the plastics are brittle too. I really enjoy my 08 S60 2.5T but can’t see the premium on an R, maybe they drive far (far) better than the normal P2 in $4-6k range?

Certainly the collector market is driven by emotion more than logic.

Regarding that specific comparison, many S60 Rs also sell in the $4-6k range, and have minimal apparent collector value.

They don't. They're quick, but they don't drive any better than any other P2. Handling is lackluster for a performance-oriented car.

The collector market is absolutely driven by emotion. Not much logic there! Just browse Bring a Trailer for a good laugh!

As clearly noted in my original post, that car is in the firm grip of a used car dealer.
