Sorry, I am not clear on what you are saying. So these have the 5 cylinder engines, but they are still an issue with oil consumption issues like you get in the early XC60 engines? I know those were problematic from new with oil issues, but did not know the 5 cylinder also had issues. Presumably it is not built the same way as the P2 5 cylinder engines? I know some of the 5 cylinder engine in the XC90 and R have been known to crack blocks or cylinder liners.

The 2.5T isn't known to crack the block (or cylinder liners, more specifically) like the R, but I guess it could happen. I think it's far less common due to the lower power output than the R.scot850 wrote: ↑05 Mar 2023, 07:48 Sorry, I am not clear on what you are saying. Neil.
The later 5 cylinder engines are included under a Volvo TSB (model year 2016 or something like that) for oil consumption. I don't know this for certain, but I'm assuming that Volvo updated the rings in these later 5 cylinders to low tension rings, similar to those used in the new at the time 4 cylinder.
These engines are the same as those used in the P1 (S40, V50, C30, C70), not the P2. They were also used in the P3 S60 and V60. The XC60 didn't have the 5 cylinder until later, just like this XC70. Earlier ones just had the SI6 (3.0 T6 and 3.2), just like the XC70 and S80. I don't believe the SI6 engines had oil consumption issues to this extent.
It seems 2013 must have been the changeover.

That is interesting. The 3.2 liter i6 went through an update in 2010 if I recall which made it less of a dog and gas pig. Certainly in the XC90. The 3.0 T6 was the engine with issues. I spoke to a few people at te local dealer with seized engines on the early XC60's. Interesting or more, concerning that the later I5 they also screwed up. So even if I have thought the the late I5 might be the only Volvo I might buy later than the P2, it now sounds like that unless it has some sort of update on the engine oil rings that you don't buy those either. This is disappointing to someone who has owned Volvos since 1975.

Yeah, unfortunately newer Volvos are just not as reliable as the older ones. The problem with so many auto makers is that they're rolling out this new tech WAY too quickly. They need to take more time for R&D and make sure that it's ready before rolling it out. It seems that it would be cheaper, considering they're paying for all the warranty repairs and recalls.

Low tension meaning less pressure against the cylinder wall for less drag, more efficiency?bmdubya1198 wrote: ↑05 Mar 2023, 08:21... I'm assuming that Volvo updated the rings in these later 5 cylinders to low tension rings...

BMW M54s had the same issues. My 330Ci consumes a hilarious amount of oil... like a quart every 400-500 miles.

I read too much and way too fast. Went back for another less quick glance and found this but no mileage statement. Could be 100K per member in the link of my first post.
