Some comments on another forum -

"I was lucky to get a 4.30:1 from a late 1800ES which is properly great. I'm getting much better overall MPG (able to switch on the overdrive at lower MPH) and it sits as steady as a rock on the motorway with good response, even on the hills.

Drove my mate's 121 fitted with OD and 4.56:1 axle which wasn't as good in my opinion. But better than the 4.10:1."

Me: Typo? Does he mean 4.56 or was there a 4.30?
It also sounds like there was a different gearbox/axle ratio combination on OD-equipped cars.

An Amazon guy in the UK -

"O/D cars with the correct diff (4.56:1) are 21 mph per 1000 rpm in O/D top.
Same car in 4th* is 16 mph per 1000 rpm in o/d top

Non O/D saloons with the correct diff (4.10:1) are somewhere in between - I think it's 18 or 18.5 mph per 1000 rpm in 4th.

In more useful terms, an O/D equipped car in 4th will be doing 5000 rpm at 80 mph in top, but in O/D only 3800 rpm at the same speed, and a non o/d saloon in 4th would be doing 4350 rpm at 80 mph.

*Estates all had this diff ratio, irrelevant of o/d & it is often said that no estate had o/d from the factory."

Moar......

"Both the rear axles and their ratios have varied with model years and editions. The rear axle ratios found on Volvo Amazon are 4.56:1, 4.55:1, 4.3:1 and 4.1:1."

And here is one for you spaceball lovers. Funny thing is the ad started at $6k, then went up the next day to $8k! He also has it posted on Facebook market place for $6500??

Hasn't been in inventory long, looks like it was listed to run the day after they got it.
Made a bookmark bid to watch it. The usual cautions about the fee structure; on their home page go to "Auction Calendar " and each location has a separate box showing the chart. Sometimes in Philly they tack on a nuisance fee for some listings, because Philly.
