Estimate was $5700 so the 03 Lexus is totaled.
Make sure you take the doors off before junking so children don’t get stuck in that soul-less junkyard appliance

( Does anyone remember those PSAs?)
PSAs?

I was about to do some upgrades and stage 0 work to the appliance, the transmission being one of them. The rear seating is basically for children and the middle for small children. In a way I am glad it was totaled but when it drove well it was a like a good watch. Brother's 98 LX470 had 335K miles on original Engine and Transmission before selling it to his mechanic. Some Lexus (older) were bulletproof including the 03 GS300. Much smoother than any of the Volvos so far but soul-less yes.

Blessings,

BKM

Those 2JZs are fantastic engines, same goes for the UZ series V8s in the SUVs and the GS400/430. I haven't driven one, but I rode with my cousin when he test drove a couple GS300s when he was wanting to buy one. They're nice cars, and truly built to last. Can't go wrong with a late '90s-early 2000s Lexus!

Yeah, that's a bad idea. Gotta be careful with that plutonium.

Yes. Just drop out the whole strut tower, no different frmo the first steps if you did have a compressor.

However I'm not sure it is cool to dispose of them with the springs fully loaded like that.

There is a semi-tricky way to disassemble them without a compressor, involves removing fasteners with the wheels on the ground. Start a thread in maintenance if you want to consider that and we will help you out viewforum.php?f=1.

Give yourself two hours for your first, and one for the second.

You need good spring seats on these cars which always pushes me away from kits

I attempted to urge someone away from those quick struts on the XC90 forum due to this... especially on an XC90, you want quality spring seats. Those kits NEVER have good ones. I believe the kit in question was from AM Auto Parts... I used their seats on my V70 GLT and they held up for the 25k or so miles I drove after that, but on my cousin's S70 they were shot within 15k miles. Pretty bad considering my originals weren't in nearly as bad shape at 170k in my GLT. One of them was totally separated. Fell apart when we disassembled the strut to install Koni STR.Ts and new OEM seats and mounts.

eEuro MIGHT still sell their quick strut kits using Sachs struts and OEM seats and mounts (can't remember which brand). That's the only one I would use. Otherwise, STAY AWAY from those cheap eBay/Gabriel/AM Auto Parts, etc. quick struts.

+300

I kind of gave up posting this about cheap quick struts but totally agree. You're basically paying the price of a quick strut to get the lifespan of a cheap spring seat, then you are back where you started if you don't want to tear down the strut tower.
