FireFox31 wrote: 23 Nov 2022, 23:24 Minor point of correction to my earlier posts. In NH, it is not possible to get a temporary plate and registration for a vehicle sold by a licensed dealer. The dealer isn't issuing temps because they're selling it as-is, not certifying that it's safe for the road, thus not eligible for temps. This may be different for your state.

Instead of temps, I simply registered the car and got real plates for it. That cost me about half what a tow would cost and I'd need the reg/plates eventually. I was fortunate to be able to drive the car home, entirely avoiding the tow cost.

I had no way to know if it would drive until I paid and had the car, with the requirement that it be off the lot by the day's end. I checked all the fluids, visually inspected the car, and did a little drive in the parking lot. This suggested that the car could drive, so I took it. Yeah, I broke down 1.5 miles from home due to a drained battery probably from a bad alternator, but I resolved that with the help of a friend giving a ride instead of a tow.
Congrats! With good planning you have done well and have a new car in your fleet.

The fee structure isn't linear, and there are a few differences at the several locations.
DC:
https://www.capitalautoauction.com/auctions/1/fees
A $1200 bid would incur about $250 in fees - $75 of that a fixed number - in DC/Temple Hills.
This company sells something like a thousand cars a week across 4 locations.
As exhaustively mentioned in other parts of the Forum, this is a sport best played near home, your mileage may vary.

Sometimes on Capital you get an IF SALE

This means , after you win, the Seller has an option to reject your bid. It is sort of like no-limit reserve.

It’s a bit annoying but there it is.

Feb 23…I think the quality of cars on Capital is coming up and price are falling from the Covid Crazy years

There are no $100 cars on Capital. The scrap guys will take anything for aboutv$400 so with $250 in fees , it’s at least $650mto land one of these , and has the nicest Gent I know in the State of Delaware says, after towing, $1000 under the pin oak.

Wish I could fit in these cars. Mind you, the roof rot might be out of my skill set to fix!
