Agree'd... but in fairness to the dealers... they didn't "green light" the original ETM design. I'm sure they have lost customers and future business over this particular bad decision by Volvo. I'm not saying they are a vicitim... I'm 'jus sayin'

Other than the ETM issue which I had read and studied about and a few other Volvo quirks... I REALLY like our V70R... so far.

I'm just saying to stay away from the dealer due to expense....and at least locally to me, they tend to want to just replace things rather than fix them. Sometimes they replace unnecessary things, charging an arm and a leg. Sometimes what they replace doesn't solve the problem. Not all dealers are like this, but many are.

There are some exceptions, but you'll find 99.99% of all dealer mechanics (of any brand) are just part swappers. God help you if you're out of warranty and still going to a dealer.

ON TOPIC: When spring cometh, XeMODeX will be getting my business. I only hope I'll make it that long. My car has now progressed from hunting idle to the herky-jerky now and then while cruising or accelerating.

Its like deja vu all over again

Hate to tell you but it's best to replace sooner than later- Don's research (although Volvo won't admit it) shows concurrent failure rates of MAF sensor and sometimes even transmissions from the "herky-jerky." If it's doing this a lot, I would drive something else and try to limit the use of your Volvo if you can't replace it now.

I have a 1999 V70 TURBO with 157,000 miles and Volvo is refusing to replace ETM. I have 6 codes in my car to the ETM , from communication to low signal. The idle is rough and goes from high to low. Hard to start sometimes, goes into limp home mode almost daily. ESP, if I have less then 6 gals. of gas in tank. I have contacted Volvo and been in dealership twice for testing. All documents have been sent to Volvo , and they say they have to tear the car apart to find out what is going on, because it does not act up in their shop, at my cost , again. And no loaner car, I am single mom and this is my only vehicle, I can barrow my parents car on time to time, but they were talking about days and then , who knows how much it would have cost me.
From this dealership I have already replaced , the radiator and the heater core and every time I go in there they try to nickel and dime me. I have since found another shop, nicer and cheaper on the wallet.
If you need a vehicle to test out, I would volunteer mine. please let me know, or how much it would cost me to redo mine?

volvo_mom,
Welcome to MVS.
The new non-contacting ETM has already been tested and is now for sale. You can go to the site www.XeMODex.com site and send them an email to see what kind of deal they will make you. As far as I know, a post a few above ours has the price at just under $500 but you have to pay for your ETM to be sent off to them and the return postage. You'll be out the use of your car while yours is away but from what I read on another site, with over-night mail (something like $80) both ways, a guy sent his off on a Monday and it was back to him two days later, on Wednesday. Hope this helps.

I'm not sure about your car but my 740s had a low pressure pump in the gas tank that fed the high pressure injector pump. In one case a ground wire was loose so the low pressure pump did not run but as long as the gas was over 3/8 full there was enough suction to feed the high pressure pump. Another time the hose from the pump to the outlet tube was bad. A 6" piece of fuel supply hose fixed it. In both cases I was able to get into the top of the tank and make repairs without having do drop the tank. There are access panels in the floor over the tank.

We are getting reports that Volvo is dragging their feet to avoid the warranty replacement.

I agree with MIJ

I would advise you to take your car to an independant repair facility that you trust. You also might even find some Volvo afficianados in your area that might be willing to remove and replace this part for you. Have them remove your ETM and send it in for the upgraded digital angle sensor. (If you don't mind my asking where are you located... roughly? There's probably plenty of Volvo message boards and members in your own area that might be helpful in regards to this matter or at the least steer you to a reputable Volvo mechanic that isn't a dealer)

End your concerns with this troublesome part once and for all. Save ALL of your receipts and document everything... without exception. If there is ever any recourse with Volvo or through the NHSTA... you'll need all of it. This company will also send back your old defective part that is being replaced and you should hold onto it as well.

This option might sound a little expensive but the up front cost of not having this part fail far outweighs the many alternatives of what can happen. I am replacing the one in our Volvo with this unit for several reasons... the biggest one is for my family... for their safety and my peace of mind that although all cars at some point do fail you... it won't be from a known defective part on our car that I know at some point is GOING to fail again.

I just purchased our Volvo a few weeks ago and had been avoiding purchasing the affected model years primarily because of this part. I was patiently waiting for this company to finalize it's product. I believe Volvo is a good car and a safe car. Once this particular part is installed it will be one less area of concern. I'm putting a lot of faith in this product and the people making it. I am not getting a "discount" nor am I expecting one as long as the product delivers what it is expected to do. Our car is actually under warranty until April 2009. But I am not going to afford Volvo the opportunity to make another repair, to attempt to "clean" an item that cannot be "cleaned" nor would I allow them to put in another "yellow" labeled unit that will without doubt fail again at some point... not for me... and not for my family.

I'd also advise you at the least to have the PCV system inspected as long as this item is being taken out. It's literally "right there" and is an often overlooked maintenence item that requires servicing at different increments. If it does need service NOW is the time to do it as the labor operation will require less time. You should speak with whomever will be doing the work if you choose to take this path and suggest they inspect it and give you a few price quotes.

(fwiw... I've been involved in the automotive parts & repair field for twenty-three years.)
